High-Sensitivity Terahertz Refractive Index Sensor in a Multilayered Structure with Graphene
摘要: In this paper, we propose a high‐sensitivity optical sensor at terahertz frequencies based on a composite structure containing a one‐dimensional photonic crystal (1D PC) coated with a layer of monolayer graphene. Between the 1D PC and the graphene there is a sensing medium. This high‐sensitivity phenomenon originates from the excitation of optical resonance between the graphene and the 1D PC. The proposed sensor is highly sensitive to the Fermi energy of graphene, the thickness and refractive index of the sensing medium, and the number of graphene layers. By selecting appropriate parameters, the maximum sensitivity (407.36 / RIU) is obtained. We believe the proposed configuration is promising for fabricating graphene‐based biosensor‐ or gas‐sensor devices and other related applications in the terahertz band.

摘要: We demonstrate the performance enhancement of field-effect transistor (FET)-based plasmonic terahertz (THz) detector with monolithic integrated antenna in low-impedance regime and report the experimental results of Si MOSFET impedance in THz regime using 0.2-THz measurement system. By designing FET with low-impedance ranges (<1 kΩ) and integrating antennas with impedances of 50 and 100 Ω, we found that our low-impedance MOSFETs have the input impedance criterion of 50 Ω at 0.2 THz and the MOSFETs with thinner gate oxide show the highly enhanced plasmonic photoresponses at 50-Ω antenna by 325 times from the result of the detector without antenna.

3.5 THz quantum-cascade laser emission from dual diagonal feedhorns
摘要: Antenna-pattern measurements obtained from a double-metal supra-terahertz-frequency (supra-THz) quantum cascade laser (QCL) are presented. The QCL is mounted within a mechanically micro-machined waveguide cavity containing dual diagonal feedhorns. Operating in continuous-wave mode at 3.5 THz, and at an ambient temperature of ~60 K, QCL emission has been directed via the feedhorns to a supra-THz detector mounted on a multi-axis linear scanner. Comparison of simulated and measured far-field antenna patterns shows an excellent degree of correlation between beamwidth (full-width-half-maximum) and sidelobe content and a very substantial improvement when compared with unmounted devices. Additionally, a single output has been used to successfully illuminate and demonstrate an optical breadboard arrangement associated with a future supra-THz Earth observation space-borne payload. Our novel device has therefore provided a valuable demonstration of the effectiveness of supra-THz diagonal feedhorns and QCL devices for future space-borne ultra-high-frequency Earth-observing heterodyne radiometers.

Evaluating intrinsic mobility from transient terahertz conductivity spectra of microcrystal samples of organic molecular semiconductors
摘要: In microcrystal samples of the prototypical organic molecular semiconductors rubrene and C10-DNTT (2,9-didecyl-dinaphtho[2,3-b:20,30-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene), we measured spectra of complex optical conductivity caused by photocarriers with optical-pump terahertz-probe spectroscopy. We analyzed the ~r xe T spectra using the Drude-Smith model and evaluated the DC mobility lDC, which includes extrinsic effects, and the intrinsic mobility lint. The resulting lDC and lint values are comparable to the mobility values obtained using transport measurements of polycrystalline and single-crystalline ?eld-effect transistors, respectively. This correspondence demonstrates that the intrinsic mobility values of organic molecular semiconductors can be evaluated from the measurements of microcrystal samples using transient terahertz spectroscopy.

Generation and modulation of terahertz gradient force in the interactions of two-color laser pulses with magnetized plasmas
摘要: Terahertz (THz) waves, as far-infrared light, offer new opportunities for the optical trapping and manipulation of single cells, in contrast to the other light sources. We present an efficient scheme to flexibly control multiple THz field distribution patterns generated by the laser–plasma interaction in a magnetized plasma. An analytical THz radiation field and two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation are constructed to verify the feasibility of the scheme. Modulation of the THz gradient force and the energy flux by an asymmetrical THz field is investigated for the purpose of trapping and manipulating particles and cells. In particular, the stabilities of flexibly controlled THz radiation are investigated carefully in the form of the strong and short laser and super-strong magnetic field induced significant spatial structure instabilities and frequency instabilities of terahertz radiation.

Broadband high-efficiency cross-polarization conversion and multi-functional wavefront manipulation based on chiral structure metasurface for terahertz wave
摘要: In this paper, a broadband and high-efficient tri-layered chiral structure metasurface (CSM) for linear polarization conversion and multi-functional wavefront manipulation was proposed and investigated numerically in terahertz region. The unit-cell of the proposed CSM consist of two orthogonal metal wires sandwiched with square split-ring resonator (SRR) structure, which can manipulate the polarization and wavefront of the transmitted wave simultaneously. Based on the Fabry-Perot-like cavity-enhanced effect of proposed CSM, broadband and high-efficiency cross-polarization conversion can be achieved. Numerical simulation results indicate that the cross-polarization transmission coefficient is higher than 0.9 from 0.4 THz to 1.0 THz, with a fractional bandwidth of 85.7%. The proposed CSM can achieve complete 2π phase coverage by adjusting the geometric parameters of the unit-cell structure. As a proof of multi-functional wavefront manipulation, anomalous refraction with a wide angle, two kinds of focusing metalenses and vortex beam generation are investigated to verify the multi-functional wavefront manipulation performance of the proposed CSM. Our work provides an effective method of enhancing the performance of transmission-type metasurface and the proposed devices show endless potential in wavefront control and communication applications in terahertz region.

Generation of kinetic Alfv??n wave and whistler waves by parametric decay of high power laser in lasera??plasma interaction
摘要: In this paper, we report theoretical modeling for parametric decay instability of the high-intensity elliptically polarized laser beam [pump wave, (x0)]. A wave–wave interaction model is investigated, based on the decay of the high-intensity elliptically polarized laser (x0) into an oblique whistler wave (OWW, ex1T) and a kinetic Alfv(cid:2)en wave (KAW, ex2T). The importance of oblique whistler waves (OWWs, ex1T) and kinetic Alfv(cid:2)en waves (KAWs, ex2T) similar to solar wind spectra [Chatterjee et al., Nat. Commun. 8, 15970 (2017)] has been pointed out, as a means to understand the turbulent magnetic ?eld ampli?cation, implicating electron and ion dynamics [Chatterjee et al., Nat. Commun. 8, 15970 (2017); Tzeferacos et al., Nat. Commun. 9, 591 (2018); Meinecke et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. 112, 8211 (2015); Mondal et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. 109, 8011 (2012); Romagnani et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 025001 (2019); Perri et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 191101 (2012); and Adak et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 115001 (2015)]. In the nonlinear stage, the decay instability is expected to attain the turbulent state, via a cascade process or ?lamentation/modulation instability (oscillating two stream instability). Therefore, in the present paper, we have considered the ?rst part of this research, namely, the beating mechanism ex2 ? x0 (cid:2) x1T, induced due to the nonlinear interaction of elliptically polarized laser velocity and oblique whistler wave density perturbation. The nonlinear saturation will be conferred in future investigations. Besides turbulence, the relevance of the present work to terahertz radiation generation [Singh et al., Europhys. The coef?cients for the nonlinear coupling pertaining to this parametric decay process and the growth rate of the decay instability are investigated.

Non-perturbative multiphoton excitation studies in an excitonic coupled quantum well system using high-intensity THz laser fields
摘要: Multiphoton excitations and nonlinear optical properties of exciton states in GaAs/AlxGa1?xAs coupled quantum well structure have been theoretically investigated under the influence of a time-varying high-intensity terahertz (THz) laser field. Non-perturbative Floquet theory is employed to solve the time-dependent equation of motion for the laser-driven excitonic quantum well system. The response to the field parameters, such as intensity and frequency of the laser electric field on the state populations, can be used in various optical semiconductor device applications, such as photodetectors, sensors, all-optical switches, and terahertz emitters.

The origin of distorted intensity pattern sensed by a lens and antenna coupled AlGaN/GaN-HEMT terahertz detectors
摘要: Here, we report artefacts in the intensity pattern of a focused terahertz beam around 1 THz by scanning photocurrents as a function of the beam location and the frequency. Although the exact distortion is found with our specific antenna design, we believe similar artefacts could be commonplace in antenna-coupled FET terahertz detectors when the beam spot becomes comparable with the antenna size. To eliminate such artefact, new antenna designs are welcomed to achieve strong asymmetry in the terahertz field distribution under the gate while maintaining a more symmetric radiation pattern for the whole antenna.

Analysis of a single-mode waveguide at sub-terahertz frequencies as a communication channel
摘要: We study experimentally the transmission of an electromagnetic waveguide in the frequency range from 160 to 300 GHz. Photo-mixing is used to excite and detect the fundamental TE10 mode in a rectangular waveguide with two orders-of-magnitude lower impedance. The large impedance mismatch leads to a strong frequency dependence of the transmission, which we measure with a high-dynamic range of up to 80 dB and with high frequency-resolution. The modified transmission function is directly related to the information rate of the waveguide, which we estimate to be about 1 bit per photon. We suggest that the results are applicable to a Josephson junction employed as a single-photon source and coupled to a superconducting waveguide to achieve a simple on-demand narrow-bandwidth free-space number-state quantum channel.
