    摘要: Losses in the phase shifters of phased arrays are one of the main limitations of these reconfigurable antennas. This contribution presents the design and measured results of variable phase shifters on triplicate suspended transmission lines in the microwave X-band for variable pointing radar applications. The antenna assembly remains passive and with a very low level of losses in the power distribution network and the phase shifters. PIN or varactor diodes are used to control the load on the transmission line. Each of these components has advantages and disadvantages that are discussed in the communication.

  • In-band phase deviation minimization method for wideband tunable phase shifter

    摘要: This article provides a novel approach to analyze and design wideband tunable reflection-type phase shifter (RTPS) with low in-band phase deviation (IBPD) error. The proposed RTPS consists of coupled lines where through and coupled ports are terminated with varactor diodes. The coupled lines can minimize the parasitic elements of varactor diode to achieve high phase shift range (PSR). In addition, the measured frequency-dependent capacitance of varactor diode was used in the analytical analysis to obtain minimum IBPD error and high PSR. For experimental demonstration, phase shifter was fabricated at the center frequency of 2.5 GHz. The measured results show that the fabricated circuit achieved 126.85° PSR with ±6.48° IBPD error for 500 MHz bandwidth (BW). In addition, the measured maximum insertion loss variation and input/output return losses are within ±0.34 dB and higher than 16.85 dB within 500 MHz BW, respectively.

  • Dual-Layer Single-Varactor Driven Reflectarray Cell for Broad-Band Beam-Steering and Frequency Tunable Applications

    摘要: A dual-layer active reflectarray configuration is proposed for broad-band beam-steering and/or frequency-tunable applications. A unit cell composed by two stacked fixed-size rectangular patches, properly loaded with a single varactor diode, is designed to realize the dynamic phase tuning mechanism. The proposed approach offers wider bandwidths, with respect to the existing varactor-based reflectarray cells, and quite good frequency reconfigurability features, as demanded by several radar or satellite communication applications. An X-band reflectarray cell is fabricated and tested, to prove the effectiveness of the proposed approach, achieving a 318° phase agility within a measured frequency range of about 14.6% with respect to the central design frequency (i.e., 11 GHz). Wideband beam-steering reflectarray designs are demonstrated, showing 1-dB gain bandwidths equal to 9–10%.

  • 610-GHz Fourth Harmonic Signal Reactively Generated in a CMOS Voltage Controlled Oscillator Using Differentially Pumped Varactors

    摘要: A fourth harmonic signal reactively generated in a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) using differentially pumped varactors is used to demonstrate a compact 610-GHz source in 65-nm CMOS. The nonlinear C?V characteristics of accumulation mode varactor pair are used to generate the harmonic power. The circuit also utilizes a technique to boost the varactor Q and dynamic cut-off frequency to increase the harmonic power. The source delivers a peak radiating power of ?25.2 dBm, with a frequency tuning range of 604.5–618.6 GHz (2.3%), a 3-dB tuning bandwidth of 607.1–614.3 GHz (1.2%), and a dc-THz ef?ciency of 0.01% (0.013% excluding the power consumption in the current source). The chip core area is 0.62 mm × 0.39 mm excluding the area for bond pads.

  • Differentially-Fed Aperture-Coupled Magneto-Electric Dipole Antenna With Continuously Variable Beamwidth

    摘要: A beamwidth reconfigurable linear array antenna utilizing three magneto-electric (ME) dipole antenna elements with no need for a complex feeding network is presented. In this design, the ME dipole antenna elements are differentially excited by three parallel transverse resonant slots etched on the broad wall of a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity. By symmetrically embedding four copper posts that are connected to varactor diodes between the adjacent slots, the electric field perturbation in the SIW cavity can be realized by manipulation of the varactors. In other words, altering bias voltage of all the varactors simultaneously could offer granular control over the excitation amplitude and phase of the antenna elements. Consequently, continuously variable beamwidth of the antenna can be obtained under electronic control. A fully operational prototype was designed, fabricated, and tested to validate the proposed design. Measured results indicate that the overlapped -10 dB impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 19.6% and the half-power beamwidth (HPBW) in the E-plane is capable of varying from 39° to 107° within the operating frequency band.

    摘要: This paper presents a fully synthesizable phase-locked loop (PLL) based on injection locking, with an interpolative phase-coupled oscillator, a current output digital-to-analog converter (DAC), and a fine resolution digital varactor. All circuits that make up the PLL are designed and implemented using digital standard cells without any modification, and automatically Place-and-routed (P&R) by a digital design flow without any manual placement. Implemented in a 65 nm digital CMOS process, this work occupies only 110 μm × 60 μm layout area, which is the smallest PLL reported so far to the best knowledge of the authors. The measurement results show that this work achieves a 1.7 ps RMS jitter at 900 MHz output frequency while consuming 780 μW DC power.

  • Tunable phase shifter in substrate integrated waveguide

    摘要: In this paper, A variable substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) phase shifter is presented. The phase shifter is formed by capacitively coupling varactors to a longitudinal slot on a SIW. Compared to other SIW phase shifters, our design is tunable, and only occupies 7.5 mm longitudinal length. Experiment results indicate the device is shown to have up to 60 degrees phase shift in the 5.3–6 GHz range with insertion loss better than 3 dB and return loss generally better than 20 dB.

    摘要: In this paper, we introduce a novel electronically steerable antenna. The proposed design is a substrate integrated waveguide based quasi-uniform leaky-wave antenna. Introducing sets of switches over the slots and biasing them non-uniformly enables the scanning capability. Due to non-uniform distribution of the bias voltage of the switches, we achieve large variation in the radiation patterns. The center frequency is chosen as 28.5 GHz to accommodate 5G wireless networks. The width, length, and height of the antenna are 24 mm, 68 mm, and 0.3 mm, respectively. Scanning capability, compactness, and simplicity of the proposed structure makes it a suitable candidate for 5G wireless networks.

    摘要: A novel tunable band-notch as well as narrow band reconfigurable coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed UWB Dielectric Resonator Antenna (DRA) has been proposed in this paper. The tunable band-notch and narrow band characteristics are achieved by placing split ring resonators (SRR) below the coplanar waveguide gap. A pair of varactor loaded SRR placed in the slots of the feeding CPW line contribute to a band-notch tuning of 1 GHz. The gain of the standalone DRA is 2 - 4 dBi in the operating range from 4 GHz to 11 GHz. The impedance bandwidth of the standalone DRA is from 2.8 GHz to 11 GHz. The narrowband characteristics is achieved by placing switches between signal and ground line of the CPW precisely above the SRRs. This antenna can be used for both interweave and underlay dynamic spectrum access in Cognitive Radio Applications.
