  • Synthesis and characterization of S-doped-rGO/ZnS nanocomposite for the photocatalytic degradation of 2-chlorophenol and disinfection of real dairy wastewater

    摘要: In this study, a facile one-pot method has been used for the synthesis of zinc sulfide decorated sulfur-doped reduced graphene-oxide (S-rGO/ZnS) nanocomposite. The photocatalytic applications of ZnS and S-rGO/ZnS) nanocomposite is investigated for the decontamination and disinfection of 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) and real dairy wastewater. The physico-chemical characteristics of ZnS and S-rGO/ZnS were analyzed using photoluminescence spectroscopy, UV visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. The experimental findings revealed that the S-rGO/ZnS nanocomposite own superior photocatalytic activity with 99.3 % degradation of 2-chlorophenol within four hours of solar light exposure. Furthermore, the antimicrobial potential of S-rGO/ZnS was also highlighted with the observed high disinfection potential while treatment of dairy wastewater. Overall, this study may offer useful insights to established visible light S-rGO/ZnS nanocomposite having the potential to be efficiently used for multiple applications in wastewater purification.

  • Photodegradation of 2-Chlorophenol in TiO2/UV System: Phytotoxicity Assessment of Treated Solutions Against Seedling Growth of Turnip and Tomato

    摘要: The photodegradation and detoxification of 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) in TiO2 suspensions were studied using monochromatic UV-lamp. The effect of pH on the photodegradation of 2-CP was investigated. Removal of 98% of initial 2-CP was achieved within 210 under optimum concentration of 2-CP (60 mg/L) and TiO2 (80 mg/L). The apparent first-order rate constant kapp of 2-CP is estimated to be 0.0043 min–1 at pH 4, while a 3-fold increase in kapp was observed at pH 9. Phytotoxicity effects of treated 2-CP on seed germination, root elongation and plant growth of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) and turnip (Brassica rapa) seeds were also carried out with the aim of water reuse and environment protection. No statistically differences have been also found to exist for seed germination of tomato and turnip between deionized water (control) and phototreated 2-CP solution, indicating a significant removal of the overall toxicity. In the 10th day of germination, the average root elongation increases at 210 min of photocatalytic degradation yielding 7.1 ± 0.9 and 5.6 ± 0.66 cm for turnip and tomato seeds, respectively. Turnip plants irrigated with the phototreated 2-CP solution grow in a similar manner as the plant irrigated with the tap water. The phototreated 2-CP can be used in the irrigation of agriculture garden but only after further treatment.

  • Photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol with the use of FTO/TiO2/SrTiO3 composite prepared by microwave-assisted hydrothermal method

    摘要: Microwave-assisted hydrothermal method was applied to obtain SrTiO3 photocatalyst by transformation of a thin TiO2 layer deposited on the conducting solid substrate (FTO-glass) via dissolution-precipitation reaction in alkaline solution. The influence of Sr2+ ions concentration on crystallinity, composition as well as photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic properties of the resultant materials was investigated. The XRD studies indicated the presence of some amount of co-deposited SrSiO3 due to reaction of metasilicates released from the glass substrate (not covered with FTO film). However, the process of glass dissolution was substantially prevented by protection of the back side of the sample with a Teflon tape. The best activity in photodecomposition of 4-chlorophenol under irradiation with 365 nm diode was obtained for FTO/TiO2/SrTiO3 composite fabricated in 6 h synthesis in the solution containing 0.1 M Sr(NO3)2, at temperature of 180 °C. The photoelectrochemical properties of the composites and FTO/TiO2 electrode were studied in the solution of Na2SO4 under illumination with a xenon lamp. The increased photocurrent density and longer electron lifetime for the hybrid system in comparison to those of TiO2 was discussed in terms of suppressed recombination rate due to formation of TiO2/SrTiO3 interface. It was also found that the side product, SrSiO3, reveals an excellent adsorption properties with respect to methylene blue and therefore, the system SrTiO3/TiO2/FTO/glass/SrSiO3 may be used as bifunctional composite for adsorption and photocatalysis.

  • Facile and efficient 3-chlorophenol sensor development based on photolumenescent core-shell CdSe/ZnS quantum dots

    摘要: Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconducting inorganic nanoparticles, tiny molecules of 2–10 nm sizes to strength the quantum confinements of electrons. The QDs are good enough to emit light onto electrons for exciting and returning to the ground state. Here, CdSe/ZnS core/shell QDs have been prepared and applied for electrochemical sensor development in this approach. Flat glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was coated with CdSe/ZnS QDs as very thin uniform layer to result of the selective and efficient sensor of 3-CP (3-chlorophenol). The significant analytical parameters were calculated from the calibration plot such as sensitivity (3.6392 μA μM?1 cm?2) and detection limit (26.09 ± 1.30 pM) with CdSe/ZnS/GCE sensor probe by electrochemical approach. The calibration curve was fitted with the regression co-efficient r2 = 0.9906 in the range of 0.1 nM ~ 0.1 mM concentration, which denoted as linear dynamic range (LDR). Besides these, it was performed the reproducibility in short response time and successfully validated the fabricated sensor for 3-CP in the real environmental and extracted samples. It is introduced as a noble route to detect the environmental phenolic contaminants using CdSe/ZnS QDs modified sensor by electrochemical method for the safety of healthcare and environmental fields at broad scales.

  • Photoactive ZnO Materials for Solar Light-Induced CuxO-ZnO Catalyst Preparation

    摘要: In this work, the solar light-induced redox photoactivity of ZnO semiconductor material was used to prepare CuxO-ZnO composite catalysts at room temperature with a control of the chemical state of the copper oxide phase. Cu2(I)O-ZnO and Cu(II)O-ZnO composite catalysts were prepared by using Cu(acac)2 in tetrahydrofuran-water and Cu(NO3)2 in water as metallic precursor, respectively. Prior to the implementation of the photon-assisted synthesis method, the most efficient photoactive ZnO material was selected from among different ZnO materials prepared by the low temperature polyol and precipitation methods with carbonates and carbamates as precipitation agents. The photocatalytic degradation of the 4-chlorophenol compound in water under simulated solar light was taken as a model reaction. The ZnO support materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface area and porosimetry measurements, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the synthesis method strongly influenced their photoactivity in terms of 4-chlorophenol degradation and of total organic carbon removal. The most photoactive ZnO material was prepared by precipitation with carbonates and calcined at 300 ?C, benefiting from a high specific surface area and a small mean crystallite size for achieving a complete 4-chlorophenol mineralization within 70 min of reaction, with minimum Zn2+ released to the solution. Besides thermal catalysis applications, this work has opened a new route for the facile synthesis of Cu2O-ZnO heterojunction photocatalysts that could take place under solar light of the heterojunction built between the p-type semi-conductor Cu2O with direct visible light band gap and the ZnO semiconductor phase.
