  • Robust 1.7-μm, all-polarization-maintaining femtosecond fiber laser source based on standard telecom fibers

    摘要: We demonstrate a compact 1.7-μm all-polarization-maintaining (PM) ultrafast fiber laser source, which employs soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) in an optical fiber as the dominant spectral-shifting mechanism. The laser generates stable pulses with 384 fs pulse width and 102 MHz repetition rate centered at 1.7 μm with 7 nm spectral bandwidth. The average power is about 35 mW with a high conversion efficiency of 66 %. The measured root mean square (RMS) output power stability over 10 hours is as low as 0.22 %. Both experimental and simulation results demonstrate that this laser has a potential to improving multiphoton imaging depth.

  • Black Phosphorus-Film with Drop-Casting Method for High-Energy Pulse Generation From Q-Switched Er-Doped Fiber Laser

    摘要: We have reported high-energy pulse generation from a Q-switched Er-doped fiber laser based on black phosphorus (BP) with a drop-casting method. Poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium (PDDA) is employed to protect BP. A passive Q-switching operation is achieved by using the BP/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film as the saturable absorbers (SAs). When the pump power increases from 130.4 mW to 378 mW, the repetition rate increases from 13.33 kHz to 26.6 kHz, and the pulse duration decreases from 10.67 μs to 7.11 μs. The maximum pulse energy is 468.03 nJ, to the best of our knowledge, which is the highest pulse energy produced from Q-switched fiber laser based on BP-SA at 1.5 μm. The obtained high-energy pulse demonstrates that BP/PVA film fabricated by such a drop-casting method can provide an ideal SA for high pulse energy generation from fiber lasers, and it has a potential application of remote sensing.

  • Spectrally Flat Supercontinuum Generation in a ZBLAN Fiber Pumped by Erbium-Doped Mode-Locked Fiber Laser

    摘要: We have experimentally demonstrated the flat supercontinuum (SC) generation using a 10-m-long ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF (ZBLAN) fluoride fiber pumped by an erbium-doped mode-locked fiber laser incorporating carbon-nanotube-based saturable absorbers. In order to improve the spectral flatness of SC, the standardized single-mode fiber with different lengths is connected to the output of the mode-locked fiber laser before the pulse amplification. The generated SC with ZBLAN fiber exhibits the best spectral flatness with fluctuation less than 1.29 dB over the wavelength of 1571.8 nm ? 1803.1 nm, showing potential applications in optical sensing.

  • Spatial-mode switchable, multi-wavelength all-fiber erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser based on low modal crosstalk mode multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX)

    摘要: We experimentally demonstrate an all-fiber erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on a Sagnac interferometer with a low modal crosstalk mode multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX). Three linearly polarized (LP) modes are generated by mode MUX/DEMUX, which consists of cascaded mode-selective couplers. The proposed fiber laser can simultaneously achieve spatial-mode switching and multi-wavelength tuning. In the experiment, single-, dual-, and triple-wavelength lasing outputs for LP01, LP11, LP21 and hybrid modes are obtained. The stabilities for LP01, LP11, LP21 and hybrid modes are investigated in more than 20 min, 16 min, 12 min and 16 min, respectively. Moreover, the mode intensity profiles, the OSNRs of the lasing output and the slope efficiencies are also measured.

  • 1.8?μm passively Q-switched thulium-doped fiber laser

    摘要: This work demonstrates a simple and reliable passively Q-switched thulium-doped fiber laser capable of generating an output with a peak wavelength at 1.8 μm. Lasing is realized from the shorter wavelength region of a thulium-doped silica fiber gain medium by suppressing lasing at longer wavelengths in combination with a tunable bandpass filter. The laser is modulated by a single-walled carbon nanotube film saturable absorber. The generated Q-switched laser is capable of achieving a high repetition rate of 67.9 kHz and a narrow pulse width of 1.2 μs. As most work on the 1.6–1.8 μm waveband focuses on continuous-wave and mode-locked lasers, to the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a passively Q-switched thulium-doped fiber laser operating at 1.8 μm with an all-silica fiber setup. The demonstrated laser has potential for various applications including biomedical surgery and polymer-based welding applications.

  • Limitations of graphene nanocoated optical tapers for high-power nonlinear applications

    摘要: In this letter, we investigate the limitations of graphene as a saturable absorber for high-power nonlinear optical applications. The response of graphene nanocoated optical tapers against the average optical power injected is tested. We point out that the power handled by such components is limited and their nonlinear properties are strongly and permanently modified when exposed to high optical power. The origin of the degradation of the components is discussed.

  • Nonlinear multimodal interference for ytterbium-doped all-fiber mode-locking noise-like pulse generation

    摘要: This work demonstrates the generation of the noise-like pulse (NLP) in an all-normal-dispersion passively mode-locked ytterbium-doped ring laser cavity with nonlinear multimodal interference as an equivalent all-fiber saturable absorber, for the first time to the best of our knowledge. Depending on the appropriate optimization of the intra-cavity birefringence and reasonable control of the curving curvature of the multimode fiber, self-started NLP operation can be built and maintained within a wide pump range. Additionally, the effect of the multimode fiber length on the NLP mode-locking performance and the generation of the high power NLP have also been experimentally studied.

  • Newly developed chromium-doped fiber as a saturable absorber at 1.55- and 2.0-μm regions for Q-switching pulses generation

    摘要: We demonstrate a Q-switching operation laser at 1.55- and 2-μm region using a homemade 10 cm long of Chromium-doped ?ber (CrDF) as a passive saturable absorber (SA). Erbium-doped ?ber (EDF) and Thulium-doped ?ber (TDF) as a gain medium cooperate in the all-?ber ring cavity con?guration. CrDF was fabricated by Modi?ed Chemical Vapour Deposition (MCVD) technique in conjunction with conventional solution doping (SD) method. The CrDF has a saturable absorption of 9% at 1.55-μm region with a saturation intensity of 22 MW/cm2. Therefore, a stable pulse train obtainable within 75–173 mW, with a repetition rate increases from 68.12 kHz to 115.9 kHz. At the maximum pump level, a shorter pulse width, maximum output power, and maximum pulse energy are 3.85 μs, 10.86 mW, and 94.1 nJ, respectively. In TDF laser cavity, the laser pulsing generates from 363 mW to 528 mW, where the repetition rate increases from 13.02 kHz to 27.62 kHz. At maximum pump power, a shorter pulse width, maximum output power, and pulse energy are obtained with 4.48 μs, 6.36 mW, and 230.27 nJ, respectively. Both pulse trains at 1.55- and 2-μm region are stable with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 71 dB and 44 dB, respectively. These ?ndings are important to the discovery of robust passive saturable absorber development in a form of ?ber which has a similar melting point to the rest of the silica ?ber in the proposed cavities. Thus, it will be a kick-started to alternative form of passive SAs in developing a future high-power ?ber lasers.

    摘要: An investigation of gain, optical power, and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise characteristics of different types of semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) operating in the conventional (C-) band is carried out. The types of SOAs include linear, nonlinear and in-line SOA that are customized configuration through OptiSystem software. These SOAs are further simulated in MATLAB using a numerical steady-state model to determine and evaluate their performance. The results showed that the linear SOA has the most ideal and distinct characteristics, as compared to the nonlinear and in-line SOAs rendering it more suitable as gain medium in the multiwavelength fiber laser (MWFL) application.

  • Point-by-Point Femtosecond-Laser Inscription of 2-μm-Wavelength-Band FBG through Fiber Coating

    摘要: We propose a point-by-point inscription method for fiber Bragg grating (FBG) fabrication using a femtosecond pulsed laser focused through a fiber polyimide coating, realizing a 2-μm-wavelength-band FBG. A femtosecond laser acts as the inscription laser, focused by a 63× oil lens. A first-order FBG was fabricated with a grating interval of 700 nm. The 15- μW pulsed laser was focused directly on the fiber core through the polyimide coating and cladding. A first-order FBG for 2004.8-nm light with more than 56% reflectances was fabricated. High wavelength sensitivity and linearity of the FBG were demonstrated by temperature and strain-sensing testing. The first-order FBG of 2004.8 and 2000.2 nm resonant wavelengths could be realized simultaneously through parallel inscription method in 3000μm long grating area.
