  • A single-cell-gap transflective liquid crystal display with a vertically aligned cell

    摘要: A single-cell-gap transflective liquid crystal display with a vertically aligned cell using square ring electrode is demonstrated. The top substrate has a top planar common electrode, a square ring pixel electrode is coated on the bottom substrate, while a bumpy reflector is coated under the bottom substrate. In this device, the planar common electrode and square ring pixel electrode generate a strong longitudinal electric field in the transmissive region (T region) and a weak fringe field in the reflective region (R region). As result, the T and R regions accumulate the same optical phase retardation. The simulation results show that the display exhibits reasonably low operating voltage, high transmittance and well-matched voltage-dependent transmittance and reflectance curves. Besides, fabrication process of the transflective liquid crystal display is very simple.

  • Wound healing of laser injured skin with glycerol monooleicate cubic liquid crystal

    摘要: Laser has found increasingly wider applications in the medical filed, but laser is likely to cause damage to patients’ skin. In this experiment, we were surprised to find that glyceryl monooleate (GMO)-based cubic liquid crystal had excellent healing effect on the skin of guinea pigs damaged by laser. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), H.E. pathology, Masson trichrome dyeing, interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels and the percutaneous depth of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) dyeing were used to evaluate the therapeutic effect of GMO-based cubic liquid crystals against laser damage of different degrees among guinea pigs. GMO-based cubic liquid crystals had an obvious effect in the treatment of slight and moderate laser damage. This finding may provide a effective medical treatment protocols for laser skin damage.

    摘要: We demonstrate a new method to detect terahertz (THz) power by combining cholesteric liquid crystal microcapsule (CLCM) with three-dimensional porous grapheme (3DPG). The power of the THz radiation is measured using the hue image which is digitalized from the color change of a CLCM. Based on the the rmochromic property of CLCM and the high absorption of 3DPG over 97% in the frequency range of 0.32 THz a quantitative visualization of the THz intensity up to 2.7×103 mW/cm2 is presented and the minimal detectable THz power is only 0.009 mW. The THz power meter is cost-e?ective, portable, and high e?cient, which can be used in many applications such as THz imaging, inspection and sensing.

  • External pressure induced liquid crystal defects for optical vortex generation

    摘要: Simple and arbitrary creation of liquid crystal (LC) defects can be highly useful, in particular, for the creation of optical vortex. We report a novel method to create an isolated and stable +1 type concentric LC defect by combing an external pressure on a vertically aligned liquid crystal cell (VALC) and the application of electric fields. The method does not require special material in alignment layer, nor patterned electrodes such as in spatial light modulator, but it can produce stable and rewritable defects in a LC cell. We show that the created +1 defect can be used to generate optical vortices with ±2(cid:125) orbital angular momentum. The simple and cost-effective process and its tunability for the position of defect make the method useful in various applications such as advanced optical communication and quantum computation using tunable optical vortices.

  • Transmissive flexoelectro-optic liquid crystal optical phase modulator with 2 <b>??</b> modulation

    摘要: In this paper, we demonstrate analog phase modulation in a transmissive configuration using the flexoelectro-optic effect in short-pitch chiral nematic liquid crystal (LC) devices. Two different modes are considered, both of which are shown to generate full 2π phase modulation at 1 kHz switching frequency. The first configuration that is considered consists of a half-wave plate that is placed between two flexoelectro-optic LC devices that are subjected to electric fields that are applied in phase. Second, we demonstrate that a similar phase modulation response can be observed by removing the half-wave plate and subjecting the two flexoelectro-optic LC devices to electric fields whereby the polarities are out of phase. Both configurations demonstrated herein are promising for the development of next-generation LC spatial light modulators, particularly when reflective geometries are challenging or impractical.

  • An all-solid-state lamellar-nanostructured polymer electrolyte in-situ-prepared from smectic liquid crystal for thermally stable dye-sensitized solar cells

    摘要: A novel all-solid-state polymer electrolyte based on thiolate/disulfide redox couple was in-situ prepared from a lamellar-assembled liquid crystal precursor for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The use of the thiolate/disulfide redox couple allowed the in-situ polymerization, which ensured both preservation of the lamellar nanostructure in electrolyte and sufficient interfacial contact in DSSC. Electrochemical analysis revealed that the lamellar-nanostructured electrolyte possessed charge transport ability and photovoltaic performance quite close to the liquid crystal electrolyte precursor. The resultant all-solid-state DSSCs showed a thermally stable photovoltaic performance with PCE higher than 2% from 35 to 90 °C. The method in using in-situ polymerization of nanostructured liquid crystals to prepare solid-state electrolytes shed a new light for efficient and stable all-solid-state DSSC preparation, especially in large-scale actual application.

  • Textural and electro-optical study of a room temperature nematic liquid crystal 4ì?-pentyl-4-biphenylcarbonitrile doped with metal oxide nanowires in planar and in-plane switching cell configurations

    摘要: This work shows the doping effect of metal oxide nanowires (alumina nanowires) on the textural and electro-optical characteristics of nematic liquid crystal (5CB) in planar and in-plane switching (IPS) cell configurations. Results indicate the increase in nematic to isotropic phase transition temperature after doping in both planar and IPS cells. A decrease in threshold voltage in addition to increase in contrast ratio, birefringence, and band gap energy was observed after doping with alumina nanowires in both types of cells. Overall analysis shows that IPS cell configuration has more improved threshold voltage and contrast ratio in addition to decrease in birefringence and transmission intensity, as compared to planar cell configuration. No effect of cell configuration was observed on energy band gap and found same value for both planar and IPS cell configurations, as energy band gap is a material specific property.

  • Polymer functionalized nanoparticles in liquid crystals: combining PDLCs with LC nanocomposites

    摘要: Liquid crystal (LC)–polymer blends are important stimuli responsive materials already employed in a wide range of applications whereas nanoparticle (NP)–LC blends are an emerging class of nanocomposites. Polymer ligands offer the advantages of synthetic simplicity along with chemical and molecular weight tunability. Here we compare the phase behavior of 5CB blended with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and with gold NPs functionalized with thiolated PEO (AuNP–PEO) as a function of PEO concentration by DSC, POM and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Both PEO and the AuNP–PEO form uniform dispersions in isotropic 5CB and phase separate below the I–N phase transition temperature. Above the PEO crystallization temperature, the PEO/5CB blends show the expected biphasic state of PEO rich-isotropic liquid co-existing with PEO-poor nematic droplets. At PEO concentrations above 10 wt%, nematic 5CB nucleates with PEO crystallization. Both PEO and AuNP–PEO induce homeotropic alignment of the 5CB matrix immediately below TNI. The AuNP–PEO/5CB blends form thermally reversible cellular networks similar to AuNPs functionalized with low molecular weight mesogenic ligands. A thermodynamic model to account for the observed phase behavior is presented.

    摘要: This paper focuses on a non-mechanical zoom lens system using Liquid Crystal (LC). The LC lens cell is well known as an optical device of which the focal length can change non-mechanically as a lens by small electric power. The authors apply the two LC lens cells for composing the zoom lens system in which the magnification can change continuously in this paper. As two representative types of the telescopic lens, the Keplerian and the Galilean are famous. The former combines two convex lenses, while the latter combines a convex lens and a concave lens. The range of the focal length of which the LC lens cell can change is definite. It depends on the lens power, which is defined as an inverted value of the focal length. In this study, potential performances of the magnification range as the zoom lens, from the minimum to the maximum, have been estimated by simulation, comparing between the Keplerian and Galilean types. In addition, requirements of the lens power of the LC lens has been estimated. The authors have also discussed their smallest realizable size of the LC zoom lens system from the above simulation results.

  • Multispectral Management of the Photon Orbital Angular Momentum

    摘要: We report on a programmable liquid crystal spatial light modulator enabling independent orbital angular momentum state control on multiple spectral channels. This is done by using electrically controllable “topological pixels" that independently behave as geometric phase micro-optical elements relying on self-engineered liquid crystal defects. These results open interesting opportunities in optical manipulation, sensing, imaging, and communications, as well as information processing. In particular, spectral vortex modulation allows considering singular spatiotemporal shaping of ultrashort pulses which may find applications in many areas such as material processing, spectroscopy, or elementary particles acceleration.
