  • Helical Long-Period Gratings Inscribed in Polarization-Maintaining Fibers by CO2-Laser

    摘要: We demonstrate fabrication of helical long-period gratings (HLPGs) in a polarization-maintaining fiber using CO2-laser. The maximum polarization dependent loss (PDL) of the grating was measured to be more than 30 dB at the resonance wavelength. The HLPG was found to have a high index sensitivity of -7248.6 nm/RIU when the surrounding refractive index changes in the range of 1.4470-1.4600, temperature sensitivity of 158.8 pm/°C, and strain sensitivity of 3.17 pm/με. The twist sensitivities based on intensity variation were measured to be 5.98 dB/ (rad/m) (co-directional twist) and -5.97 dB/ (rad/m) (contra-directional twist), respectively. The demonstrated grating devices have promising applications as high-sensitivity fiber sensors, PDL compensator etc.

  • Experimental Analysis of Bragg Reflection Peak Splitting in Gratings Fabricated Using a Multiple Order Phase Mask

    摘要: We performed an experimental analysis of the effect of phase mask alignment on the Bragg grating reflection spectra around the wavelength of λB = 1560 nm fabricated in polymer optical fiber by using a multiple order phase mask. We monitored the evolution of the reflection spectra for different values of the angle φ by describing the tilt between the phase mask and the fiber. We observed that the peak at λB is split into five separate peaks for the nonzero tilt and that separation of the peaks increases linearly with φ. Through comparison with theoretical data we were able to identify the five peaks as products of different grating periodicities, which are associated with the interference of different pairs of diffraction orders on the phase mask.

  • Long tapered fiber with array of FBG

    摘要: A tapered optical fiber with an adiabatic transition from single-mode to a few-mode part has been fabricated with an array of fiber Bragg gratings being inscribed during the drawing process. We demonstrate that the propagating optical signal remains single-mode along the tapered fiber FBG array even in a multimode part of it. The spectral width of the reflected signal from the tapered optical fiber is 4 nm. The level of the reflected signal is up to 5% at some wavelengths.

  • Biocompatible photoluminescent silk fibers with stability and durability

    摘要: Exploring photoluminescent silk fibers, possessing biocompatibility as well as stable and durable fluorescent properties, is a requirement for the development of novel photoluminescent biomaterials. Herein, we fabricate photoluminescent silk fibers, TPCA@SF, via modifying an organic fluorescent molecule (5-oxo-3,5-dihydro-2H-thiazolo [3,2-a] pyridine-7-carboxylic acid, TPCA) onto silk fibers, along with using quaternary ammonium salt didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) as color fixing agent. The hydrogen bonds and electrostatic association among silk fibers, TPCA and DDAB ensure the stable modification. The facile and green fabrication process is achieved in water under mild conditions without using any toxic substances. The TPCA@SF manifests the combining features of high quantum yield, fluorescence water-fastness, anti-photobleaching, good mechanical property and biocompatibility. The strategy holds great potential for exploring various biocompatible photoluminescent substances with stability and durability.

  • Highly Photoluminescent and Stable N-Doped Carbon Dots as Nanoprobes for Hg2+ Detection

    摘要: We developed a microreactor with porous copper fibers for synthesizing nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with a high stability and photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY). By optimizing synthesis conditions, including the reaction temperature, flow rate, ethylenediamine dosage, and porosity of copper fibers, the N-CDs with a high PL QY of 73% were achieved. The PL QY of N-CDs was two times higher with copper fibers than without. The interrelations between the copper fibers with different porosities and the N-CDs were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results demonstrate that the elemental contents and surface functional groups of N-CDs are significantly influenced by the porosity of copper fibers. The N-CDs can be used to effectively and selectively detect Hg2+ ions with a good linear response in the 0~50 μM Hg2+ ions concentration range, and the lowest limit of detection (LOD) is 2.54 nM, suggesting that the N-CDs have great potential for applications in the fields of environmental and hazard detection. Further studies reveal that the different d orbital energy levels of Hg2+ compared to those of other metal ions can affect the efficiency of electron transfer and thereby result in their different response in fluorescence quenching towards N-CDs.

  • Resistive switching behavior and mechanism in flexible TiO2@Cf memristor crossbars

    摘要: Fiber-based memristors are expected to be one of the most ideal candidates to the future wearable nonvolatile devices. In this work, Carbon fibers coated with rutile TiO2 nanorods (TiO2 NRs) were prepared via hydrothermal method, which were denoted as TiO2@Cf. Flexible TiO2@Cf memristor crossbar was facilely assembled on a polyimide (PI) film. This device exhibited bi-directional threshold switching behavior and a maximum ON/OFF ratio of 105. In addition, the conductance of the memristors can be continuously adjusted by consecutive sweep cycles of bias voltages. The devices also exhibit excellent endurance over 1500 cycles with a negligible shift. The carriers transport and resistance switching of the TiO2@Cf memristor crossbar were explained by the Fowler-Nordheim tunneling model. The oxygen vacancies (OV) in TiO2 drifted to the interface of TiO2/Cf by an applied electric field, thereby reducing the depletion region and enhancing the current. This work provides a profound understanding of the resistive switching behavior and the related mechanism in flexible TiO2@Cf memristor crossbars, and paves a new way for potential applications for memristors in artificial synapses and flexible devices.

  • Optical Characterization of Doped Thermoplastic and Thermosetting Polymer-Optical-Fibers

    摘要: The emission properties of a graded-index thermoplastic polymer optical fiber and a step-index thermosetting one, both doped with rhodamine 6G, have been studied. The work includes a detailed analysis of the amplified spontaneous emission together with a study of the optical gains and losses of the fibers. The photostability of the emission of both types of fibers has also been investigated. Comparisons between the results of both doped polymer optical fibers are presented and discussed.

  • Enhanced electrical conductivity of transparent electrode using metal microfiber networks for gridless thin-film solar cells

    摘要: Improving the optical transmittance and electrical conductivity in transparent conductors (TC) has been a critical issue for decades due to their numerous applications. In this paper, we suggest an approach to produce extremely conductive TC material from electroplated Ni microfiber networks (NiMFs) in order to achieve highly efficient and aesthetically superior thin-film solar cells and modules. The high cross-sectional aspect ratio of NiMFs significantly enhanced their electrical conductivity and optical transmittance simultaneously. The TC structure employing NiMFs was a successful substitute for conventional patterned grids in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 thin-film solar cells because it reduced the series resistance, which is especially advantageous for large-area cells. The NiMF-induced transmittance loss was compensated for by the formation of a light diffusion layer on the NiMF. We propose that the excellent performance of NiMF TC materials enables the elimination or significant reduction of the grids in thin-film solar cells and modules.

  • Dispersion flattened extremely high-birefringent kagome lattice elliptic core photonic crystal fiber in THz regime

    摘要: A highly birefringent elliptic porous-core photonic crystal fiber with kagome lattice cladding has been presented for terahertz (THz) wave transmission. The slotted airholes inside the elliptic core effectively disrupt the symmetry of the porous-core which offers extremely high modal birefringence whereas the kagome cladding structure results in significantly low effective material loss (EML). The birefringence of the proposed structure is 9.73 × 10?2 for y-polarized mode at an operating frequency of 1 THz. The suggested structure also provides very flat dispersion over a bandwidth of 300 GHz. It is highly expected that this elliptic core waveguide would be remarkably useful in numerous polarization maintaining THz applications.
