This technology can be deployed in already existing networks to achieve a dense and ultrasensitive seismic sensor array. Applications ranging from seismic protection to chemical sensing are explored.

  • Agar-coated fiber Bragg grating sensor for relative humidity measurements: influence of coating thickness and polymer concentration nm

    摘要: The importance of humidity control is spreading through a broad spectrum of applications, from food and pharmaceutical industries to biomedical and chemical fields. During the last decades, the growing interest in fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) led to new approaches and applications for the humidity measurement by means of the deposition of hygroscopic materials on gratings. The influence of the coating material and its features such us coating thickness (tk) and concentration (wt%) on static and dynamic metrological properties have been investigated in the literature. In this study, four agar-coated FBG sensors for humidity measurements have been fabricated, and the influence of tk and wt% on the sensors’ sensitivity and response time has been experimentally assessed. Sensitivity increases with tk and wt%: for instance, at 1 wt% it was 0.0024 nm·%-1 and 0.0052 nm·%-1 for tk=87 μm and tk=212 μm, respectively. Results showed that also the response time increased with tk and wt%: for instance, at 1 wt% it was 56.7 s and 107.6 s for tk=87 μm and tk=212 μm, respectively.

  • Fiber Vector Bend Sensor Based on Multimode Interference and Image Tapping

    摘要: A grating-less fiber vector bend sensor is demonstrated using a standard single mode fiber spliced to a multimode fiber as a multimode interference device. The ring-shaped light intensity distribution at the end of the multimode fiber is subject to a vector transition in response to the fiber bend. Instead of comprehensive imaging processing for the analysis, the image can be tapped out by a seven-core fiber spliced to the other end of the multimode fiber. The seven-core fiber is further guided to seven single mode fibers via a commercial fan-out device. By comparing the relative light intensities received at the seven outputs, both the bend radius and its direction can be determined. Experiment has shown that a slight bend displacement of 10 μm over a 1.2-cm-long multimode fiber in the X direction (bend angle of 0.382°) causes a distinctive power imbalance of 4.6 dB between two chosen outputs (numbered C4 and C7). For the same displacement in the Y direction, the power ratio between the previous two outputs C4 and C7 remains constant, while the imbalance between another pair (C3 and C4) rises significantly to 7.0 dB.

    摘要: With the increase in implementation of advanced communication equipment, especially in the medical sector, finding solutions to anticipated problems has become paramount. Our envisaged problem is the uneasy procedure of taking patients’ variables frequently in community health centers, where there is usually minimal support staff. This paper indicates that human variables such as body temperature and movement at a special ward in a community health care center are transferable from one computer to another. However, our implementation integrated a temperature sensor (LM35), pyroelectric infrared, and infrared to a low-cost Arduino-generic Lilypad microcontroller (as the transmitter). The developed device was able to communicate with the receiver side (comprised of Arduino Mega, infrared receiver, and a computer). We were able to transfer data seamlessly from Mr. C. E. Ngene to a remote computer for analysis. This project will make up for the unavailability of expensive devices and low workforce in the rural community health centers. This designed device can help patients to be attended to quickly as the patients start to have issues.

  • Fibre Bragg grating sensor applications for structural health monitoring

    摘要: Purpose – Structural health monitoring (SHM) has become an attractive subject in aerospace engineering ?eld considering the opportunity to avoid catastrophic failures by detecting damage in advance and to reduce maintenance costs. Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors are denoted as one of the most promising sensors for SHM applications as they are lightweight, immune to electromagnetic effects and able to be embedded between the layers of composite structures. The purpose of this paper is to research on and demonstrate the feasibility of FBG sensors for SHM of composite structures. Design/methodology/approach – Applications on thin composite beams intended for SHM studies are presented. The sensor system, which includes FBG sensors and related interrogator system, and manufacturing of the beams with embedded sensors, are detailed. Static tension and torsion tests are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the system. Strain analysis results obtained from the tests are compared with the ones obtained from the ?nite element analyses conducted using ABAQUS? software. In addition, the comparison between the data obtained from the FBG sensors and from the strain gauges is made by also considering the noise content. Finally, fatigue test under torsion load is conducted to observe the durability of FBG sensors. Findings – The results demonstrated that FBG sensors are feasible for SHM of composite structures as the strain data are accurate and less noisy compared to that obtained from the strain gauges. Furthermore, the convenience of obtaining reliable data between the layers of a composite structure using embedded FBG sensors is observed. Practical implications – Observing the advantages of the FBG sensors for strain measurement will promote using FBG sensors for damage detection related to the SHM applications. Originality/value – This paper presents applications of FBG sensors on thin composite beams, which reveal the suitability of FBG sensors for SHM of lightweight composite structures.

  • S fiber taper-based fiber loop ring-down refractometer

    摘要: A fiber-optic refractive index (RI) sensor based on fiber loop ring-down (FLRD) technique with an S fiber taper (SFT) structure is proposed and experimentally investigated. The SFT is served as an in-line Mach–Zehnder interferometer and inserted into a compensated fiber loop for RI measurement. By optimizing the parameters of the fiber loop, the quality of the ring-down signals is improved effectively. The surrounding refractive index can be conveniently measured by interrogating the ring-down time of the fiber loop. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed sensor has a high sensitivity of ?3128.954 μs/RIU in the measurement range of 1.3330–1.3682. The proposed RI sensor combines the specialties of SFT interferometer and FLRD technology, which could be a good candidate in applications.

  • Photo-refreshable electrochemical sensor based on composite electrode of carbon nanotubes and TiO2 nanoparticles

    摘要: Surface fouling and passivation on the electrode during electrochemical process is a major challenge for the practical applications of electrochemical sensors. Herein, a photo-refreshable electrochemical sensor was presented based on carbon nanotubes/TiO2 nanoparticles (CNTs/TiO2-NPs) composite electrode, which not only exhibits high electrochemical activity towards the determination of 5-hydroxytryptamine and dopamine, but also displays excellent reproducibility in the surface electrochemical monitoring without damaging microstructure. The linear range for 5-hydroxytryptamine determination is 0.5-400 μM (R=0.991) under UV light irradiation with a detection limit of 0.47 μM (S/N=3). The CNTs/TiO2-NPs electrode also shows excellent response to dopamine, with the linear range of 0.05 μM to 100 μM and a detection limit of 0.022 μM (S/N =3). The high performance of this photo-refreshable electrochemical sensor should be attributed to the excellent photocatalytic activity of the TiO2-NPs and the high electrochemical activity of CNTs.

  • Digital Circuit Methods to Correct and Filter Noise of Nonlinear CMOS Image Sensors

    摘要: Nonlinear complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors (CISs), such as logarithmic (log) and linear–logarithmic (linlog) sensors, achieve high/wide dynamic ranges in single exposures at video frame rates. As with linear CISs, fixed pattern noise (FPN) correction and salt-and-pepper noise (SPN) filtering are required to achieve high image quality. This paper presents a method to generate digital integrated circuits, suitable for any monotonic nonlinear CIS, to correct FPN in hard real time. It also presents a method to generate digital integrated circuits, suitable for any monochromatic nonlinear CIS, to filter SPN in hard real time. The methods are validated by implementing and testing generated circuits using field-programmable gate array (FPGA) tools from both Xilinx and Altera. Generated circuits are shown to be efficient, in terms of logic elements, memory bits, and power consumption. Scalability of the methods to full high-definition (FHD) video processing is also demonstrated. In particular, FPN correction and SPN filtering of over 140 megapixels per second are feasible, in hard real time, irrespective of the degree of nonlinearity.

  • Fabrication of Stretchable Circuits on Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) Pre-Stretched Substrates by Inkjet Printing Silver Nanoparticles

    摘要: Several research methodologies have recently been developed to allow for the patterning of conductive lines on elastomeric rubber substrates. Specifically, various conductive materials, substrates, and fabrication techniques were investigated to develop stretchable circuits. One promising technique recommends the application of axial strain on an elastomer substrate prior to patterning conductive lines on it. When the substrate is released, conductive lines buckle to form waves, making the circuit stretchable. However, the majority of applications of stretchable circuits require fitting them to two-dimensional surfaces, such as the human body. Hence, in this paper we propose the concept of radial pre-stretching of the substrates to enhance the stretchability of the fabricated circuits. In particular, straight silver conductive lines were deposited on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface using inkjet printing technology, and subsequently tested under both axial and radial loads. Radial pre-stretching was compared to axial pre-stretching, resulting in an improved performance under radial loads. The optimal performance was achieved by pre-stretching the PDMS substrate with a radial strain of 27%. This resulted in stretchable circuits which could sustain radial loads with an average breakdown strain of approximately 19%. Additionally, horseshoe patterns were printed on radially pre-stretched PDMS substrates and their performance was compared to that of their straight line counterparts. Though these patterns are generally favorable for the fabrication of stretchable circuits, the optimal horseshoe pattern examined in this study could only sustain up to 16% radial strain on average when radially pre-stretched by 27%.

  • Highly Stable and Ultrafast Hydrogen Gas Sensor Based on 15 nm Nanogaps Switching in a Palladium-Gold Nanoribbons Array

    摘要: Palladium (Pd) nanogap hydrogen gas (H2) sensors based on the large volume expansion of β phase palladium hydride (β-PdH) are highly promising, owing to their fast and accurate sensing capability at room temperature in air. However, such sensors do not work well at H2 concentrations below 1%. At such low H2 concentrations, Pd exists as α-PdH, which has a slow and insufficient volume expansion and cannot completely close nanogaps. Furthermore, the lattice strains induced from the phase transition (α-PdH → β-PdH) behavior degrade the stable and repeatable long-term sensing capability. Here, these issues are resolved by fabricating an array of periodically aligned alloyed palladium–gold nanoribbons (PdAu NRB) with uniform 15 nm nanogaps. The PdAu NRB sensor enables highly stable and ultrafast H2 sensing at the full detection range of H2 concentrations from 0.005% to 10% along with the excellent limit of detection (≈0.0027%), which is sufficiently maintained even after seven months of storage in ambient atmosphere. These breakthrough results will pave the way for developing a practical high-performance H2 sensor chip in the future hydrogen era.
