  • Microscopic-Stress-Induced Retardation between amorphous silicon nitride and amorphous indium zinc oxide having different stresses

    摘要: It is very important to increase the contrast ratio in liquid crystal display (LCD) TV using polymer-stabilized vertical alignment (PS-VA) mode. The luminance of the black state is greatly reduced by changing the parameters of the polarizer, the color filter, and the liquid crystal. However, these have the side effect of reducing the characteristics such as the transmittance, the response time, and the viewing angle. In this paper, the luminance of the black state can be reduced by lowering the stress induced retardation at the edge of pixel electrode without changing the materials in the PS-VA mode. It has been shown for the first time that the stress difference in the heterogeneous layers such as amorphous indium zinc oxide (a-IZO) and amorphous silicon nitride (a-SiNx) can optically create birefringence in the microscopic region. By controlling the stress difference in the heterogeneous membrane, the microscopic-stress-induced retardation (MSIR) could be lowered and the contrast ratio of the PS-VA mode could be increased up to 10%.

  • Vertically aligned laser sliced MWCNTs

    摘要: Applications of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) benefit from the availability of specific lengths of the material while keeping the outer walls pristine, for example, for applications requiring vertically aligned tubes. To this end, a simple and effective continuous flow ‘top down’ process to control the length of sliced MWCNTs has been developed using a vortex fluidic device (VFD) coupled with a 1064 nm pulse laser, with the process in the absence of chemicals and any auxiliary substances. Three different length distributions of the sliced MWCNTs, centered at 75 ± 2.1 nm, 300 ± 1.8 nm and 550 ± 1.4 nm, have been generated with the length depending on the VFD operating parameters and laser energy, with the processing resulting in a decrease in side wall defects of the material. We also show the ability to vertically self assemble short MWCNTs on a silicon substrate with control of the surface density coverage using a simple dipping and rinsing method.

  • Vertically-aligned lead-free BCTZY nanofibers with enhanced electrical properties for flexible piezoelectric nanogenerators

    摘要: Flexible lead-free (Ba0.85Ca0.15)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3-0.2 mol%Y nano?bers (BCTZY NFs) were synthesized by electrospinning and their corresponding nanogenerators (NGs) with vertical alignments were fabricated. The low-temperature sintering properties of BCTZY NFs were investigated, to optimize their synthesis path and minimize the thermal energy consumption during the sintering process. The continuity, ?exibility, and stability of the BCTZ-based NFs were improved by adding Y3+. Moreover, the temperature-evolved Raman spectra displayed a high Curie temperature of 280 °C for BCTZY NFs, which was far higher than that of about 90 °C for BCTZ-based ceramic bulks, owing to the discontinuous physical property of NFs. The dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties of the vertically aligned BCTZY NFs/PDMS were estimated and compared with those of BCTZ NFs/PDMS composites, to verify the advantages of vertical alignments and the donor doping e?ect of Y3+. Vertically aligned BCTZY NF-based NGs showed an average VOC of 3.0 V and ISC of 85 nA by ?nger tapping, suggesting their potential applications in tiny energy harvesting.

  • 39.4: <i>Invited Paper:</i> Self-alignment of liquid crystal for multi-domain liquid-crystal display

    摘要: By introducing photopolymerizable amphiphile organic monomers(PAOM) into nematic liquid crystals (NLC) with controlled amount of UV-curable reactive mesogen (RM), a multi-domain vertical-alignment LC device was successfully demonstrated. The device, possessing a vertically aligned LC director in four different azimuthal directions, exhibited a fast response time, wide-viewing-angle characteristics and high voltage holding ratio(VHR), in the absence of conventional polyimides vertical-alignment layers. The formation of automatic and robust vertical alignment layer was analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy(SEM).

  • A Bottom-Up Approach to Solution-Processed, Atomically Precise Graphitic Cylinders on Graphite

    摘要: Extended carbon nanostructures, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), exhibit remarkable properties but are difficult to synthesize uniformly. Herein, we present a new class of carbon nanomaterials constructed via the bottom-up self-assembly of cylindrical, atomically-precise small molecules. Guided by supramolecular design principles and circle packing theory, we have designed and synthesized a fluorinated nanohoop that, in the solid-state, self-assembles into nanotube-like arrays with channel diameters of precisely 1.63 nm. A mild solution-casting technique is then used to construct vertical “forests” of these arrays on a highly-ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface through epitaxial growth. Furthermore, we show that a basic property of nanohoops, fluorescence, is readily transferred to the bulk phase, implying that the properties of these materials can be directly altered via precise functionalization of their nanohoop building blocks. The strategy presented is expected to have broader applications in the development of new graphitic nanomaterials with π-rich cavities reminiscent of CNTs.

  • Fabrication of vertical alignment liquid crystal cell without forming a conventional polyimide-alignment layer

    摘要: A novel preparation method of the vertical alignment polymer film (VAPF) was proposed by polymerisation of the monomers, 2,3-difluoro-4?-[2-(diacryloyl-oxy-hexyl)methyl ester-hexadecyl-oxy]-biphenyl (DFDAMHB) and 2,7-dimethacryloyl-oxy-phenanthrene (DMAPhen), being dissolved in the liquid crystal (LC) material. For obtaining the vertical alignment (VA), the ultraviolet exposure was carried out to the LC cell below the nematic to isotropic transition temperature of the LC material. The VA mode LC cell with the VAPF produced from the monomers DFDAMHB and DMAPhen exhibited enough level of electro-optical and response properties, high voltage holding ratio and low residual direct current voltage.
