  • Rapid qualitative evaluation of velvet antler using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS)

    摘要: The aim of this work is to study a rapid analysis method to evaluate velvet antler products qualitatively, using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). We used principal component analysis to select feature lines of LIBS spectra of velvet antler, and built two partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) classification models to distinguish between inferior and good quality velvet antler by using the intensities of all lines and feature lines as input variables, respectively. The correct classification rates (CCRs) of these two models were both 100%. In order to test the robustness of the models, we used these two models to discriminate the samples not included in the training set to build the model, and the CCRs were 87.5% and 100%, respectively. The results demonstrated that combining LIBS with PLS-DA could evaluate the quality of velvet antler, and the robustness could be improved by using the intensities of feature lines as inputs.

  • A versatile fluorometric in-situ hybridization method for the quantitation of hairpin conformations in DNA self-assembled monolayers

    摘要: As the performance of hairpin DNA (hpDNA)-based biosensors is highly dependent on the yield of stem-loop (hairpin) conformations, we report herein a versatile fluorometric in-situ hybridization protocol for examining hpDNA self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on popularly used biochip substrates. Specifically, the ratio of fluorescence (FL) intensities of hpDNA SAMs (in an array format) before and after hybridization was adapted as the key parameter for performing such a determination. Upon confirming the existence of mixed and tunable DNA conformations in binary deposition solutions and the efficient hybridization of the hairpin strands with target DNA via gel electrophoresis assays, we have tested the fluorometric protocol for determining the coverages of hpDNA in hpDNA/ssDNA SAMs prepared on gold; its accuracy was validated by Exonuclease I (Exo I)-assisted electrochemical quantitation. To further confirm its versatility, this FL protocol was adapted for quantifying hairpin conformations formed on glass and polycarbonate (PC) substrates. The molar ratios of surface-tethered hairpin conformations on the three different substrates were all found to be proportional to but less than that in the binary deposition solutions, and dependent on the substrate morphology. The findings reported herein are beneficial to the construction of highly efficient DNA hairpin-based sensing surfaces, which essentially facilitates the creation of hpDNA-based biosensors with optimal detection performance.

    摘要: Most sensitivity analysis studies of optimization algorithm control parameters are restricted to a single objective function evaluation (OFE) budget. This restriction is problematic because the optimality of control parameter values (CPVs) is dependent not only on the problem’s fitness landscape, but also on the OFE budget available to explore that landscape. Therefore, the OFE budget needs to be taken into consideration when performing control parameter tuning. This paper presents a new algorithm tuning multiobjective particle swarm optimization (tMOPSO) for tuning the CPVs of stochastic optimization algorithms under a range of OFE budget constraints. Specifically, for a given problem tMOPSO aims to determine multiple groups of CPVs, each of which results in optimal performance at a different OFE budget. To achieve this, the control parameter tuning problem is formulated as a multiobjective optimization problem. Additionally, tMOPSO uses a noise-handling strategy and CPV assessment procedure, which are specialized for tuning stochastic optimization algorithms. Conducted numerical experiments provide evidence that tMOPSO is effective at tuning under multiple OFE budget constraints.

    摘要: This paper provides an overview of the main features of several bibliometric indicators which were proposed in the last few decades. Their pros and cons are highlighted and compared with the features of the well-known impact factor (IF) to show how alternative metrics are speci?cally designed to address the ?aws that the IF was shown to have, especially in the last few years. We also report the results of recent studies in the bibliometric literature showing how the scienti?c impact of journals as evaluated by bibliometrics is a very complicated matter and it is completely unrealistic to try to capture it by any single indicator, such as the IF or any other. As such, we conclude that the adoption of more metrics, with complementary features, to assess journal quality would be very bene?cial as it would both offer a more comprehensive and balanced view of each journal in the space of scholarly publications, as well as eliminate the pressure on individuals and their incentive to do metric manipulation which is an unintended result of the current (mis)use of the IF as the gold standard for publication quality.

  • Effect of purification on the electrical properties of transparent conductive films fabricated from single-walled carbon nanotubes

    摘要: Transparent conductive films (TCFs) made of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are usually fabricated using highly pure SWCNTs. Obtaining pure SWCNTs is an important step for harnessing their excellent electrical properties. Herein, we studied the effect of purification of SWCNTs by thermal and acid processes on the electrical properties of TCFs. These purification processes also affected the length and diameter of the SWCNT bundles. The purity of SWCNTs was determined by UV–visible-near-infrared spectroscopy and the metal content by thermogravimetric analysis. TCFs were made by spraying aqueous suspensions of SWCNTs having different purities onto polyethylene terephthalate substrates, and the ratios of dc to optical conductivities of the films were compared. Thermally purified (TP) SWCNT TCFs had a higher ratio than thermally and acid-purified (TAP) ones even though the purity of the TP-SWCNTs was lower than that of the TAP-SWCNTs. The conducting paths of the SWCNT bundle networks in the TP-SWCNT TCFs were well organized, because nanosized graphitic nanoparticles and metal catalysts occupied the spaces between the CNT bundles or networks without hindering the network connections. Although the SWCNT purity affected the conductivity of the SWCNT TCFs, the network property of lower junction resistance with smaller bundle diameter was more influential on film conductivity.

  • Evaluation of baking performance by means of mid-infrared imaging

    摘要: The present work aims to validate mid-infrared imaging as a promising method for evaluating oven systems. Therefore, a novel approach by analyzing mid-infrared radiation patterns captured by a thermal camera and subsequent image processing was developed. A thermal camera was adapted to two di?erent oven systems: a standard electric deck oven and a novel gas-?red baking oven with integrated volumetric ceramic burners (VCBs). The baked goods were analyzed and key indicators describing the ?nal product quality were determined. Speci?c volume, surface browning and mid-infrared image processing demonstrated a comparable performance of both oven systems. Furthermore, the determined surface heat homogeneity of the items to be baked was 0.65 ± 0.05 (–) for the electronic oven and 0.70 ± 0.03 (–) for the VCB oven. The proposed approach proved its fundamental quali?cation for comparing and evaluating di?erent oven systems.

  • A method for the statistical evaluation of the fluorescence intensity of single blinking quantum dots using a confocal fluorescence microscope

    摘要: The evaluation of the fluorescence intensity of single quantum dots (QDs) using a confocal fluorescence microscope can provide an alternative approach for estimating the effects of environmental changes or surface modifications on the fluorescence intensity of single QDs. In the case of blinking QDs, irregular blinking would significantly influence the intensity evaluation results that are based on the analysis of one or a few single QDs. In this regard, statistical intensity evaluations based on a large number of single QDs would be helpful to estimate an approximate intensity value of single QDs with reduced effects of blinking on the evaluation results. Herein, we developed a convenient method to statistically evaluate the fluorescence intensity of a large number of single blinking QDs using Gaussian distribution. Based on the intensity analysis of thousands of single QDs, the fluorescence intensity of the single QDs evaluated using a confocal fluorescence microscope was approximately 4090 with little data fluctuation induced by blinking.

  • A new approach for photovoltaic module cooling technique evaluation and comparison using the temperature dependent photovoltaic power ratio

    摘要: Many photovoltaic module cooling techniques are available to reduce the solar cell temperature, resulting in enhanced e?ciency. Although the power of the photovoltaic module is usually reported as a measure for the performance of the cooling technique, the performance assessment and comparison among di?erent coolers become di?cult if di?erent photovoltaic module’s reference power is being utilized. The existing method requires calculations to be done repeatedly to obtain the photovoltaic module’s power, for any given value of the reference power. In order to compare the performance of the coolers, the use of the same reference power is needed, resulting in a lengthy process. Hence, a new assessment method is proposed, based on the temperature dependent photovoltaic module’s power ratio that is de?ned and derived. The new method identi?es the relevant parameters that are essential for measuring the performance of the cooler such as the power of a photovoltaic module with a cooler and the reference power at photovoltaic module’s standard test conditions. The outcome is that the calculation of the unknown power for di?erent reference power can be instantly obtained and the performance comparison among di?erent coolers become simple without going through the lengthy process as it is in the case of the existing method. It is shown that the proposed method has the same results as the existing method which is experimentally validated. This is evidence to support the new method which may have potential to be applied by photovoltaic module cooling techniques designers.

  • Machine learning predictive models for optimal design of building-integrated photovoltaic-thermal collectors

    摘要: This research article aims to examine the feasibility of several machine learning techniques to forecast the exergetic performance of a building-integrated photovoltaic-thermal (BIPVT) collector. In this regard, it uses multiple linear regression, multilayer perceptron, radial basis function regressor, sequential minimal optimization improved support vector machine, lazy.IBK, random forest (RF), and random tree approaches. Moreover, it implements the performance evaluation criteria (PEC) to evaluate the system's performance from the perspective of exergy. The use of these approaches serves the identification process to realize the relationship between the input–output parameters of the BIPVT system. The novelty of this work is that it utilizes and compares multiple learning algorithms to predict the PEC of BIPVT through design parameters. Hence, the research considers the parameter (PEC) as the essential output of the BIPVT collector, while the input parameters are the length, width, and depth of the duct, located under the PV modules, as well as the air mass flow rate. The results of the research for the statistical indexes of mean absolute error, root mean square error, relative absolute error (%), and root relative squared error (%) show values of (0.2967, 0.3885, 1.8754, and 1.5237) and (0.4957, 0.8153, 2.9586, and 2.8289), respectively, for the training and testing datasets. While R2 ranges (0.9997-0.9999) for those datasets. Therefore, to estimate the exergy performance of the BIPVT collector, the RF model is superior to other proposed models.

  • Design and Evaluation of a Permanently Installed Plane-Based Calibration Field for Mobile Laser Scanning Systems

    摘要: Mobile laser scanning has become an established measuring technique that is used for many applications in the fields of mapping, inventory, and monitoring. Due to the increasing operationality of such systems, quality control w.r.t. calibration and evaluation of the systems becomes more and more important and is subject to on-going research. This paper contributes to this topic by using tools from geodetic configuration analysis in order to design and evaluate a plane-based calibration field for determining the lever arm and boresight angles of a 2D laser scanner w.r.t. a GNSS/IMU unit (Global Navigation Satellite System, Inertial Measurement Unit). In this regard, the impact of random, systematic, and gross observation errors on the calibration is analyzed leading to a plane setup that provides accurate and controlled calibration parameters. The designed plane setup is realized in the form of a permanently installed calibration field. The applicability of the calibration field is tested with a real mobile laser scanning system by frequently repeating the calibration. Empirical standard deviations of <1 ... 1.5 mm for the lever arm and <0.005? for the boresight angles are obtained, which was priorly defined to be the goal of the calibration. In order to independently evaluate the mobile laser scanning system after calibration, an evaluation environment is realized consisting of a network of control points as well as TLS (Terrestrial Laser Scanning) reference point clouds. Based on the control points, both the horizontal and vertical accuracy of the system is found to be < 10 mm (root mean square error). This is confirmed by comparisons to the TLS reference point clouds indicating a well calibrated system. Both the calibration field and the evaluation environment are permanently installed and can be used for arbitrary mobile laser scanning systems.
