  • Spectroscopy of BL Lacertae objects of extraordinary luminosity

    摘要: Aims. We aim to determine the redshift (or stringent lower limits) of a number of bright BL Lacs objects. Methods. We secured optical and near-infrared medium-resolution spectra of four bright BL Lac objects of unknown redshift using the spectrograph X-Shooter at the ESO-VLT. Results. In spite of the high quality of the spectra and the extended spectral range of the observations, we have not detected intrisic spectral features for these sources. However, we are able to provide strigent lower limits to their redshift. In particular, for the two TeV sources PG 1553+113 and H 1722+119, we infer z > 0.30 and z > 0.35 respectively. We also detect an intervening Ca II absorption doublet in the spectrum of MH 2136-428 that is ascribed to the halo of a nearby giant elliptical galaxy at a projected distance of ~100 kpc. Conclusions. Under the hypothesis that all BL Lacs are hosted by a luminous bulge-dominated galaxies, the spectroscopic observations of bright BL Lacs presently indicate that these objects are likely sources with extremely beamed nuclear emission. We present simulations to show under which circumstances it is possible to probe this hypothesis from the detection of very weak absorptions using the next generation of extremely large optical telescopes.

  • Advances in Optical Fabrication for Astronomy

    摘要: The fabrication of precision optical surfaces has undergone a revolution in recent years. The first purpose of this paper is to present case studies of novel optical designs not previously published, that utilise complex, or ‘freeform’, surfaces. These designs are described both for their own merits, and as pointers towards the types of adventurous designs for ground or space based astronomy that might now be envisaged. The potential benefits are enhanced optical performance in more compact, lower-mass and rugged packages. Such designs would, until recently, have been impossible to fabricate, and so we also describe some of the recent technical advances that have materially changed this position.

  • High-contrast imaging in polychromatic light with the self-coherent camera

    摘要: Context. In the context of direct imaging of exoplanets, coronagraphs are commonly proposed to reach the required very high contrast levels. However, wavefront aberrations induce speckles in their focal plane and limit their performance. Aims.An active correction of these wavefront aberrations using a deformable mirror upstream of the coronagraph is mandatory. These aberrations need to be calibrated and focal-plane wavefront-sensing techniques in the science channel are being developed. One of these is the self-coherent camera, of which we present the latest laboratory results. Methods. We present here an enhancement of the method: we directly minimized the complex amplitude of the speckle ?eld in the focal plane. Laboratory tests using a four-quadrant phase-mask coronagraph and a 32 × 32 actuator deformable mirror were conducted in monochromatic light and in polychromatic light for di?erent bandwidths. Results. We obtain contrast levels in the focal plane in monochromatic light better than 3 × 10?8 (RMS) in the 5–12 λ/D region for a correction of both phase and amplitude aberrations. In narrow bands (10 nm) the contrast level is 4 × 10?8 (RMS) in the same region. Conclusions. The contrast level is currently limited by the amplitude aberrations on the bench. We identi?ed several improvements that can be implemented to enhance the performance of our optical bench in monochromatic as well as in polychromatic light.

  • Image restoration of solar spectra

    摘要: Context. When recording spectra from the ground, atmospheric turbulence causes degradation of the spatial resolution. Aims. We present a data reduction method that restores the spatial resolution of the spectra to their undegraded state. Methods. By assuming that the point spread function (PSF) estimated from a strictly synchronized, broadband slit-jaw camera is the same as the PSF that spatially degraded the spectra, we can quantify what linear combination of undegraded spectra is present in each degraded data point. Results. The set of equations obtained in this way is found to be generally well-conditioned and sufficiently diagonal to be solved using an iterative linear solver. The resulting solution has regained a spatial resolution comparable to that of the restored slit-jaw images. Conclusions. We have developed a new image restoration method for the restoration of ground-based spectral data over a large field of view. The method builds on the PSF information recovered by the MOMFBD code and typically reaches a spatial resolution comparable to that of the broadband slit-jaw images used to recover the PSF.

  • Co-phasing of a diluted aperture synthesis instrument for direct imaging

    摘要: Context. Amongst the new techniques currently developed for high-resolution and high-dynamics imaging, the hypertelescope architecture is very promising for direct imaging of objects such as exoplanets. The performance of this instrument strongly depends on the co-phasing process accuracy. In a previous high-?ux experimental study with an eight-telescope array, we successfully implemented a co-phasing system based on the joint use of a genetic algorithm and a sub-aperture piston phase diversity using the object itself as a source for metrology. Aims. To ?t the astronomical context, we investigate the impact of photon noise on the co-phasing performance operating our laboratory prototype at low ?ux. This study provides experimental results on the sensitivity and the dynamics that could be reached for real astrophysical observations. Methods. Simulations were carried out to optimize the critical parameters to be applied in the co-phasing system running in the photon-counting regime. We used these parameters experimentally to acquire images with our temporal hypertelescope test bench for di?erent photon ?ux levels. A data reduction method allows highly contrasted images to be extracted. Results. The optical path di?erences have been servo-controlled over one hour with an accuracy of 22.0 nm and 15.7 nm for 200 and 500 photons/frame, respectively. The data reduction greatly improves the signal-to-noise ratio and allows us to experimentally obtain highly contrasted images. The related normalized point spread function is characterized by a 1.1 × 10?4 and 5.4 × 10?5 intensity standard deviation over the dark ?eld (for 15 000 snapshots with 200 and 500 photons/frame, respectively). Conclusions. This laboratory experiment demonstrates the potential of our hypertelescope concept, which could be directly transposed to a space-based telescope array. Assuming eight telescopes with a 30 cm diameter, the I-band limiting magnitude of the main star would be 7.3, allowing imaging of a companion with a 17.3 mag.

  • Characterization of Cameras for the COSMO K-coronagraph

    摘要: Digital image sensors are ubiquitous in astronomical instrumentation and it is well known that they suffer from issues that must be corrected for data to be scienti?cally useful. I present discussion on errors resulting from digitization and characterization of nonlinearity and ADC errors of the PhotonFocus MV-D1024E cameras selected for the K-coronagraph of the Coronal Solar Magnetism Observatory. I derive an analytic expression for quantization errors. The MV-D1024E camera has adequate bit depth for which quantization error is not an issue. I show that this is not the case for all cameras, particularly those with deep wells and low read noise. The impact of nonlinearity and ADC errors on science observations of the K-coronagraph is analyzed using a simpli?ed telescope model. Errors caused by the camera ADCs result in systematic errors in the measurement of the polarimetric signal of several times 10?9?Be, which is about an order of magnitude above the desired sensitivity. I demonstrate a method for post-facto data correction using a lookup table and derive parameters from camera characterization measurements that were made with a lab setup. Nonlinearity is traditionally addressed with a global correction. I show through analysis of calibration data that for the MV-D1024E this correction leaves residual systematic errors after dark and gain correction of up to 1% of the signal. I demonstrate that a pixel-wise correction of nonlinearity reduces the errors to below 0.1%. These corrections are necessary for the K-coronagraph data products to meet the science requirements. They have been implemented in the instrument data acquisition system and data reduction pipeline. While no other instruments besides the K-coronagraph or cameras besides the MV-D1024E are discussed here, the results are illustrative for all instruments and cameras.

  • Extreme Ultraviolet Multilayer Nanostructures and Their Application to Solar Plasma Observations: A Review

    摘要: The advent of nanoscale multilayer (ML) technology has led to great breakthroughs in many scientific and technological fields such as nano-manufacturing, bio-imaging, atto-physics, matter physics and solar physics. ML nanostructures are an enabling technology for the development of mirrors and reflective gratings having high efficiency at normal incidence in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) range, a spectral region where conventional coatings show a negligible reflectance. In solar physics, ML mirrors have proved to be key elements for both imaging and spectroscopy space instruments, as they allow to make observations of EUV solar plasma emissions with spatial and spectral resolutions never reached before. ML-based instruments have been used in many of the major solar satellites and have flown in numerous sounding rocket experiments; moreover, in the last two decades many studies were performed in order to develop ML structures with increasingly better performance for future solar missions. In this paper, a review of the most promising ML nanostructures developed so far and applied to the observation of solar plasma emission lines is presented. After a brief recall of ML theory, a detailed discussion of the most promising material pairs and layer stack structures proposed and applied to past and current space missions will be presented; in particular, the review will focus on the ML structures having high efficiency in the 6 nm–35 nm wavelength range. Finally, the ML stability to low energy ion bombardment will be discussed.

  • Comprehensive Measurements of the Volume-phase Holographic Gratings for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument

    摘要: The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) is a Stage IV ground-based dark energy experiment that will be employed on the Mayall 4 m Telescope to study the expansion history of the universe. In the era of massively multiplexed fiber-fed spectrographs, DESI will push the boundaries of fiber spectroscopy with a design capable of taking 5000 simultaneous spectra over 360 to 980 nm. The instrument utilizes a suite of three-channel spectrographs, where volume-phase holographic (VPH) gratings provide dispersions. Thirty-six VPH gratings were produced and their performances were evaluated at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. We present the design and the evaluation tests for the production run of the VPH gratings, verifying the incidence angle, area-weighted efficiency, and wavefront errors (WFEs). We also present the specialized test set-up developed on-site to assess the grating performances. Measurements of the VPH gratings show high consistency in area-weighted efficiency to within an rms of 2% for the red and near-infrared and 6.2% for the blue gratings. Measured WFEs also showed high consistency per bandpass. Comprehensive evaluations show that the VPH gratings meet DESI performance requirements and have been approved for integration.

  • Instrumental polarisation at the Nasmyth focus of the E-ELT

    摘要: The ~39-m European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) will be the largest telescope ever built. This makes it particularly suitable for sensitive polarimetric observations, as polarimetry is a photon-starved technique. However, the telescope mirrors may severely limit the polarimetric accuracy of instruments on the Nasmyth platforms by creating instrumental polarisation and/or modifying the polarisation signal of the object. In this paper we characterise the polarisation e?ects of the two currently considered designs for the E-ELT Nasmyth ports as well as the e?ect of ageing of the mirrors. By means of the Mueller matrix formalism, we compute the response matrices of each mirror arrangement for a range of zenith angles and wavelengths. We then present two techniques to correct for these e?ects that require the addition of a modulating device at the “polarisation-free” intermediate focus that acts either as a switch or as a part of a two-stage modulator. We ?nd that the values of instrumental polarisation, Stokes transmission reduction and cross-talk vary signi?cantly with wavelength, and with pointing, for the lateral Nasmyth case, often exceeding the accuracy requirements for proposed polarimetric instruments. Realistic ageing e?ects of the mirrors after perfect calibration of these e?ects may cause polarimetric errors beyond the requirements. We show that the modulation approach with a polarimetric element located in the intermediate focus reduces the instrumental polarisation e?ects down to tolerable values, or even removes them altogether. The E-ELT will be suitable for sensitive and accurate polarimetry, provided frequent calibrations are carried out, or a dedicated polarimetric element is installed at the intermediate focus.

  • Ground-based astrometry with wide field imagers

    摘要: High-precision astrometry requires accurate point-spread function modeling and accurate geometric-distortion corrections. This paper demonstrates that it is possible to achieve both requirements with data collected at the high acuity wide-field K-band imager (HAWK-I), a wide-field imager installed at the Nasmyth focus of UT4/VLT ESO 8 m telescope. Our final astrometric precision reaches ~3 mas per coordinate for a well-exposed star in a single image with a systematic error less than 0.1 mas. We constructed calibrated astro-photometric catalogs and atlases of seven fields: the Baade’s window, NGC 6656, NGC 6121, NGC 6822, NGC 6388, NGC 104, and the James Webb Space Telescope calibration field (in the Large Magellanic Cloud). We make these catalogs and images electronically available to the community. Furthermore, as a demonstration of the efficacy of our approach, we combined archival material taken with the optical wide-field imager at the MPI/ESO 2.2 m with HAWK-I observations. We showed that we are able to achieve an excellent separation between cluster members and field objects for NGC 6656 and NGC 6121 with a time base-line of about 8 years. Using both HST and HAWK-I data, we also study the radial distribution of the SGB populations in NGC 6656 and conclude that the radial trend is flat within our uncertainty. We also provide membership probabilities for most of the stars in NGC 6656 and NGC 6121 catalogs and estimate membership for the published variable stars in these two fields.
