  • Measurement of Optical Constants of TiN and TiN/Ti/TiN Multilayer Films for Microwave Kinetic Inductance Photon-Number-Resolving Detectors

    摘要: We deposit thin titanium nitride (TiN) and TiN/Ti/TiN multilayer ?lms on sapphire substrates and measure the re?ectance and transmittance in the wavelength range from 400 to 2000 nm using a spectrophotometer. The optical constants (complex refractive indices), including the refractive index n and the extinction coef?cient k, have been derived. With the extracted refractive indices, we propose an optical stack structure using low-loss amorphous Si (a-Si) anti-re?ective coating and a backside aluminum (Al) re?ecting mirror, which can in theory achieve 100% photon absorption at 1550 nm. The proposed optical design shows great promise in enhancing the optical ef?ciency of TiN-based microwave kinetic inductance photon-number-resolving detectors.

  • Microwave-assisted synthesis of FexZn1?xO nanoparticles for use in MEH-PPV nanocomposites and their application in polymer light-emitting diodes

    摘要: A one-step microwave-assisted polyol method was used to fabricate FexZn1?xO (x = 0.01, 0.05, 0.10) nanoparticles. Zinc acetate dihydrate, iron (III) acetylacetonate, oleic acid and diethylene glycol were placed in a Teflon-lined reaction vessel. The reaction mixture was heated up to 250 °C for 15 min in a microwave reactor. The surface modification with oleic acid prevented agglomeration of the nanoparticles. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed characteristics wurtzite hexagonal structure of ZnO and successful incorporation of the Fe dopant into the host crystal lattice. Doping of ZnO by Fe led to bandgap modification as estimated by Tauc plot. The as-prepared nanopowders were dispersed in toluene and mixed with a poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) polymer to make stable homogenous dispersions. Then, the FexZn1?xO/MEH-PPV nanocomposite thin films were prepared by spin coating and used as thin active layers in polymer light-emitting diodes. The thickness of deposited FexZn1?xO/MEH-PPV film was ca. 30 nm and that of reference neat MEH-PPV film was ca. 25 nm. The electroluminescent spectroscopy study showed that direct blending of MEH-PPV with Fe-doped ZnO nanoparticles is a simple and effective approach to significantly increase the luminance intensity of the diode in comparison to the diode fabricated by neat MEH-PPV.

  • GroundBIRD: Observation of CMB Polarization with a Rapid Scanning and MKIDs

    摘要: Cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation is an afterglow from the Big Bang. CMB contains rich information about the early stage of the universe. In particular, odd-parity patterns (B-mode) in the CMB polarization on a large angular scale would provide an evidence of the cosmic in?ation. The aim of the GroundBIRD experiment is to observe the B-mode on large angular scales from the ground. One of the most novel characteristics of the telescope used for this experiment is its rapid rotational scanning technique. In addition, the telescope uses cold optics and microwave kinetic inductance detectors. We have developed a telescope mount with a three-axis rotation mechanism (azimuth, elevation, and boresight) and measured the vibration at the focal plane stage at 20 RPM scan rotation rate. We also performed focal plane detector tests on this mount. The tests con?rmed the expected response from the geomagnetism associated with the mount rotation. We have also developed a design for the magnetic shields and a detector array on a 3-in wafer. The preparations to begin the observations at the Teide Observatory in the Canary Islands in 2018 are proceeding smoothly.

  • Microwave Photonic Signal Processing and Sensing Based on Optical Filtering

    摘要: Microwave photonics, based on optical filtering techniques, are attractive for wideband signal processing and high-performance sensing applications, since it brings significant benefits to the fields by overcoming inherent limitations in electronic approaches and by providing immunity to electromagnetic interference. Recent developments in optical filtering based microwave photonics techniques are presented in this paper. We present single sideband modulation schemes to eliminate dispersion induced power fading in microwave optical links and to provide high-resolution spectral characterization functions, single passband microwave photonic filters to address the challenges of eliminating the spectral periodicity in microwave photonic signal processors, and review the approaches for high-performance sensing through implementing microwave photonics filters or optoelectronic oscillators to enhance measurement resolution.

  • Instantaneous microwave frequency measurement with high-resolution based on stimulated Brillouin scattering

    摘要: A novel photonic method of instantaneous microwave frequency measurement (IMFM) based on Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is proposed. The principle of the technique is the employment of SBS effect to amplify/attenuate two adjacent frequency components, which result in a definite amplitude comparison function (ACF). Using this technique, the frequency of an unknown RF signal can be precisely obtained. Experimental results show the measurement capability of the proposed method over a frequency range of 0.47–23 GHz with a higher resolution of 8 MHz.

  • Investigation of Electrical Characteristics on LaAlO <sub/>3</sub> /ZrO <sub/>2</sub> /IGZO TFTs with Microwave Annealing

    摘要: Conventional thin film transistor suffered from high threshold voltage, poor subthreshold swing, and high operation voltage. These shortcomings make the traditional thin film transistor does not meet the needs with the high-performance, high-resolution, low temperature and energy conservation nowadays. Due to the good selectivity of energy transformation and rapid heating rate, microwave annealing is promising to replace conventional furnace annealing and applied in the investigation. LaAlO3/ZrO2 is employed as gate electrode and gate dielectric layer for a-IGZO TFTs, under the premise that performance of a-IGZO TFTs without decreasing. With adjusting the power/time of microwave annealing, the effect on electrical characteristics of a-IGZO TFTs is investigated.

  • Results from the validation campaign of the ozone radiometer GROMOS-C at the NDACC station of La Réunion Island

    摘要: Ozone is a species of primary interest as it performs a key role in the middle atmosphere and its monitoring is thus necessary. At the Institute of Applied Physics of the University of Bern, Switzerland, we built a new ground based microwave radiometer, GROMOS-C (GRound based Ozone MOnitoring System for Campaigns). It has a compact design and can be operated at remote places with very little maintenance requirements, being therefore suitable for remote deployments. It has been conceived to measure the vertical distribution of ozone in the middle atmosphere, by observing pressure broadened emission spectra at a frequency of 110.836 GHz. In addition, meridional and zonal wind profiles can be retrieved, based on the Doppler shift of the ozone line measured in the 4 directions of observation (North-East-South-West). In June 2014 the radiometer was installed in the Ma?do observatory, on La Réunion Island (21.2°S, 55.5°E). High resolution ozone spectra were continuously recorded during 7 months. Vertical profiles of ozone have been retrieved through an optimal estimation inversion process, using the Atmospheric Radiative Transfer Simulator ARTS2 as the forward model. The best estimate of the vertical profile is done by means of the optimal estimation method. The validation is performed against ozone profiles from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on the Aura satellite, the ozone lidar located in the observatory and with ozone profiles from weekly radiosondes. Zonal and meridional winds retrieved from GROMOS-C data are validated against another wind radiometer located in situ, WIRA. In addition, we compare both ozone and winds with ECMWF model data. Results show that GROMOS-C provides reliable ozone profiles between 30 to 0.02 hPa. The comparison with lidar shows a very good agreement at all levels. The accordance with MLS is within less than 10% for pressure levels between 25 and 0.2 hPa.

  • Generalized perspective on chiral measurements without magnetic interactions

    摘要: We present a unified description of several methods of chiral discrimination based exclusively on electric-dipole interactions. It includes photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD), enantiosensitive microwave spectroscopy (EMWS), photoexcitation circular dichroism (PXCD), and photoelectron-photoexcitation circular dichroism (PXECD). We show that, in spite of the fact that the physics underlying the appearance of a chiral response is very different in all these methods, the enantiosensitive and dichroic observable in all cases has a unique form. It is a polar vector given by the product of (i) a molecular pseudoscalar and (ii) a field pseudovector specified by the configuration of the electric fields interacting with the isotropic ensemble of chiral molecules. The molecular pseudoscalar is a rotationally invariant property, which is composed from different molecule-specific vectors and in the simplest case is a triple product of such vectors. The key property that enables the chiral response is the noncoplanarity of the vectors forming such triple product. The key property that enables chiral detection without relying on the chirality of the electromagnetic fields is the vectorial nature of the enantiosensitive observable. Our compact and general expression for this observable shows what ultimately determines the efficiency of the chiral signal and if, or when, it can reach 100%. We also discuss the differences between the two phenomena, which rely on the bound states, PXCD and EMWS, and the two phenomena using the continuum states, PECD and PXECD. Finally, we extend these methods to arbitrary polarizations of the electric fields used to induce and probe the chiral response.

  • Widely tunable single bandpass microwave photonic filter based on dual-fiber stimulated Brillouin scattering

    摘要: A new technique to achieve a single bandpass microwave photonic filter (MPF) with wide tunability based on stimulated Brillouin scattering is proposed. The MPF cascades the Brillouin frequency shifter and amplification based on a dual-fiber structure. The experimental results present a single bandpass MPF located at 21.4 GHz with a 3-dB bandwidth of 38 MHz and an out-of-band rejection ratio over 30 dB. The proposed single bandpass MPF also successfully demonstrates a wide-band tuning over 40 GHz, which is achieved by employing a frequency shifter based on carrier suppressed single-sideband modulation scheme in the structure.

  • Three-dimensional holographic imaging using data collected over cylindrical apertures

    摘要: The previously proposed near-field holographic imaging algorithms are based on the data collected over rectangular apertures. In this letter, we propose an approach for three-dimensional near-field holographic imaging with data collected over cylindrical apertures. Circular deconvolution is employed to deal with the periodicity of the functions along the azimuthal direction.
