Silicon nanowire luminescent sensor for cardiovascular risk in saliva
摘要: Cardiovascular diseases are some of the today major cause of death in the world. C-reactive protein (CRP) is well known as the main biomarker related to cardiovascular risk and heart attack occurrence. The standard CRP analyses are performed in a hospital or in a biochemical laboratory with blood analysis after a long chemical and labelling preparation that require expert personnel. In this scenario, a health care analysis that can be performed by the same patient at his own home appears extremely revolutionary. In this paper, the study of an innovative sensing platform based on the luminescence at room temperature of silicon nanowires (NWs) is reported. This NWs sensor is label-free and does not require a chemical treatment of the analyte, is strongly selective to the CRP demonstrating a femtomolar limit of detection and a wide operating range. This proposed silicon sensing platform can be realized with an industrial compatible approach and permits to reveal the strategic CRP level in saliva in order to prevent a heart attack, with great advantages for the patient.

Body Fluids and Spectroscopic Techniques in Forensics: A Perfect Match?
摘要: Human body fluids are of great interest in forensics, due to the possibility to extract their genetic information. At the moment, there is the need to develop a non-destructive, rapid and user-friendly method for the detection and identification of the body fluids usually found at crime scenes: blood, semen, vaginal fluid, saliva, sweat and urine. In this review, the spectroscopic techniques used or being researched on this topic are discussed, taking into account their advantages, limitations and advances. Although, UV-Vis light sources are used worldwide in forensic laboratories for the location of body fluids, they are not selective enough to be confirmatory. HSI, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy seem to be suitable for the identification and discrimination of body fluids, though comprehensive research about some unsolved aspects must be performed first.

Study of the IR Spectra of the Saliva of Cancer Patients
摘要: Feasibility has been demonstrated in principle for the diagnosis of lung and breast cancer by subjecting saliva to Fourier transform IR spectroscopy. Statistically significant differences in the saliva of lung cancer patients are seen at 1070–1240 cm–1, while significant differences are seen throughout the entire range for breast cancer patients. The I1398/1454 and I1240/1310 ratios were determined and found to be statistically reliable for detecting cancer pathology. Correlations were found for the intensities of the absorption bands in these IR spectra with nonspecific biochemical saliva parameters, which generally characterize greater intoxication as well as suppression of the systems for antioxidant protection and the immune response. A promising research trend involves the use of the IR spectroscopy of saliva for monitoring treatment and cancer recurrence.

Analysis of saliva composition in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) by FTIR Spectroscopy
摘要: This study was performed to evaluate possible changes in saliva composition at molecular level that can be associated with burning mouth syndrome (BMS). Saliva samples were collected from 14 women with BMS to be analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Control group (CG) was composed of 14 women who presented similar medical history, use of medications and age. The results revealed bands related to proteins in the range 1160-1647 cm-1 and lipids in the range 2852-2922cm-1. All bands showed same or high intensity for the control group, exception for the bands at 868cm-1 and 2058cm-1, which correspond respectively to nucleic acids and thiocyanate and showed great intensity for patients with BMS. Analysis of the data obtained by FTIR spectroscopy allowed us to conclude presence of alterations in saliva composition that may be directly related to BMS symptomatology as well as secondary symptoms reported by individuals.
