  • Saliency-Guided Stereo Camera Control for Comfortable VR Explorations

    摘要: The quality of visual comfort and depth perception is a crucial requirement for virtual reality (VR) applications. This paper investigates major causes of visual discomfort and proposes a novel virtual camera controlling method using visual saliency to minimize visual discomfort. We extract the saliency of each scene and properly adjust the convergence plane to preserve realistic 3D effects. We also evaluate the effectiveness of our method on free-form architecture models. The results indicate that the proposed saliency-guided camera control is more comfortable than typical camera control and gives more realistic depth perception.

  • Identifying the Optimal 3D Display Technology for Hands-On Virtual Experiential Learning: A Comparison Study

    摘要: The purpose of this study was to test different 3D display technologies in a hands-on virtual experiential learning environment (VELE) and determine the optimal 3D display technology. A conceptual framework was firstly proposed to explain the mechanism of how VR display features affect virtual experiential learning. Then, a single-factor within-subject experimental design was adopted for testing. The within-subject factor was three types of 3D display technology: fully immersive virtual reality (VR) mode [VR head-mounted display (HMD)], partially immersive VR mode (3D projection), and augmented reality (AR) mode (AR HMD). The dependent variables were visual comfort, interaction experience, learning experience, and outcome. A virtual math learning environment was established, and the aforementioned display technologies were tested in two hands-on virtual experiential learning scenarios. Results showed that different display technologies significantly affected users’ visual comfort, interaction experience, learning experience, and outcome in experiential learning (ps < 0.05). User ratings on these aspects for the VR HMD were significantly higher than those for the 3D projection and AR HMD. Thus, the VR HMD contributes to a best viewing experience and learning experience in terms of hands-on virtual experiential learning in the scenarios tested. Whether the study results still hold reliably in terms of more complex learning activities and long-term learning needs to be further studied.

  • 2D and 3D Image Quality Assessment: A Survey of Metrics and Challenges

    摘要: Image quality is important not only for the viewing experience, but also for the performance of image processing algorithms. Image quality assessment (IQA) has been a topic of intense research in the fields of image processing and computer vision. In this paper, we first analyze the factors that affect two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) image quality, and then provide an up-to-date overview on IQA for each main factor. The main factors that affect 2D image quality are fidelity and aesthetics. Another main factor that affects stereoscopic 3D image quality is visual comfort. We also describe the IQA databases and give the experimental results on representative IQA metrics. Finally, we discuss the challenges for IQA, including the influence of different factors on each other, the performance of IQA metrics in real applications, and the combination of quality assessment, restoration, and enhancement.

    摘要: Previous studies have shown that liquid crystal display (LCD) can cause visual fatigue to the human eye, but the effect of quantum dot (QD) display has not been explored yet. This study conducted a human factor experiment on the QD display and LCD. The parameters ACC, HOAs and MTF were selected as objective physiological indicators for visual quantification of visual fatigue. 39 participants performed a 45-minute video viewing task. While before and after the visual task, measured the physiological parameters of the participants' eyes. Analysis the effects of QD display and LCD on human physiological characteristics under the same conditions. The results show that: (1) The QD display and LCD have an influence on the physiological characteristics of the human eye during continuous visual task duration. These effects can be quantified by changes in human eye physiological parameters; (2) The effect of QD display on human eye physiological parameters is less than LCD: the VICO index (visual comfort index) is lower, and the participants' color feedback accuracy is higher. This study provides theoretical basis and data support for the subsequent development of quantum dot display.

  • Office light control moving toward automation and humanization: a literature review

    摘要: This review was designed to survey the development of control technology and strategies for office light environment from 1993 to 2017 by documentary research. Search engines were applied and 100 publications were selected and analyzed with the focus on energy saving and visual comfort as well as related areas, such as control technology and strategies, shading, light sources and simulation tools. It was found that general tendency in office light control technology and strategies moves towards creating more occupant-friendly and less energy consumption convergence and remarkable progress has been made in computer- and network-based integrated light control technology. Therefore, it could be predicted that in the next decade artificial intelligence and network-based office light control technology will be further developed into a complete automatic control system. Moreover, it is likely that, with the further exploration of Big Data, light control system could be merged with other control systems in an office building, such as heating, cooling, humidity, and ventilation system, forming self-learning and self-evolution control system.
