The study demonstrated that the position of the conduction band in semiconductors is crucial for plasmonic H2 evolution under visible light irradiation. Au/CeO2:Sr photocatalysts can produce H2 without a Pt cocatalyst when the CB potential is sufficiently negative. The limit for electron injection from Au nanoparticles into the CB of semiconductors lies between ?0.61 V and ?1.49 V vs. NHE.

1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
The study involved the preparation of CeO2:Sr with various Sr2+ mole fractions, loading of Au nanoparticles and Pt cocatalyst on CeO2:Sr, and characterization using X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy.
