BODIPY-based functional materials have demonstrated great potential as platforms for the development of metal-free IR emitters, despite the challenges related to their weak fluorescence in the solid state and tendency to aggregate. The review highlights the progress in the field and suggests directions for future research.

The main drawbacks for application of BODIPY as emitters in OLED are the weak fluorescence in the solid state due to their small Stokes shifts which lead to serious self-quenching at high concentration further worsen by their inherent tendency to aggregate compactly in solid state.
