To solve the worldwide challenge of oil-water separation due to frequent oil spill accidents and increasing discharges of industrial & domestic oily wastewater by introducing a simple and rapid method of picosecond laser direct ablation and drilling to fabricate high-performance oil-water separation polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane.

The as-prepared PTFE membranes exhibited superoleophilicity and under-oil superhydrophobicity, with separation efficiencies over 99.0% for various oil-water mixtures. The membranes showed excellent stability and applicability, with no significant change in performance after heavy erosion or multiple separation cycles. This work provides a new pathway for the rapid fabrication of high-performance separation membranes.
