The proposed 640-Gbps full-duplex optical transceiver system using single-channel optical DP-256-QAM for fiber and FSO links achieves a potential spectral efficiency of 15.2344 b/s/Hz. A maximum transmission distance of 160 km and 4 km is achieved for the SMF and FSO links, respectively. The system requires a laser linewidth of 100 kHz or lower, minimum OSNR of 49.4 dB, and a receiver sensitivity of -14.2 dBm to maintain an acceptable BER.

The system's performance is evaluated in simulation platform; practical implementation challenges are not addressed. The FSO link performance is considered under clear weather conditions only.
