The biofunctionalized implants with silver and zinc nanoparticles demonstrated multifunctional behavior, including the prevention of colonization by MRSA and enhancement of pre-osteoblast metabolic activity. This strategy holds great promise for the development of multifunctional bone implants.

The study is limited to in vitro and ex vivo experiments, and the exact mechanisms through which the biofunctionalization affects ROS formation are not fully understood. Further in vivo studies are required to translate the findings to clinical settings.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
Porous titanium implants were synthesized by selective laser melting (SLM) and biofunctionalized with plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) using electrolytes based on Ca/P species as well as silver and zinc nanoparticles in varying ratios.

The study used MRSA USA300 for antibacterial assays and MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts for cytocompatibility assessment.

Statistical analyses were performed using GraphPad Prism with one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc test.
