Phase pure Ba2Y5B5O17:Eu3+ red-emitting phosphors were successfully prepared, showing bright red luminescence under UV, near-UV, and blue radiation. The phosphors exhibit high colour purity and luminous efficacy, with thermal stability up to 500 K. Ceramic disks showed efficient absorption of near-UV radiation, making them suitable for application in white LEDs.

The solubility of Eu3+ in the host matrix was found to be 50% with respect to Y3+ ions. The quantum efficiency decreases with increasing Eu3+ concentration when excited at 280 nm due to nonradiative relaxation through the charge transfer state.
