To review new industrial improvements in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) of metals and discuss the most innovations and future directions of LPBF printers.

The current research showed that the most innovations and future directions of LPBF printers are toward increasing the part quality and the speed of the process. Ultra-short pulse laser has a low focus diameter around 30 μm and high focus intensity within a small diameter that can produce surface energy density of 1018 W/m2. This provides the capability of processing precious metals at high resolution and improves dimensional accuracy. Used in increasing the speed of the process, closed-loop control powder handling, automated powder sieving, interchangeable feedstock chamber, 2-axis coating, multi-layer concurrent printing and multi powder hoppers are the main innovations for the new generation of LPBF machines. Fast lasers reduce the transferring time that is another improvement for the new types of LPBF metal printers.
