The proposed method is more accurate than other methods presented in the literature for processing and calibrating historical Ca II K observations. It can also be applied to process images from photographic archives of solar observations at other wavelengths than Ca II K.

The method assumes that the QS CLV does not vary with time and that QS regions store all the information required to construct the CC for the range of brightnesses covered by the QS anywhere on the solar disc. Very poor quality observations must be rejected.
