The study demonstrated that the density of RbLaTa2O7 surface hydroxyl groups is essential for photo mineralization of TCE, whereas the surface carbonate is beneficial for the formation of intermediate chlorinated product. The findings suggest that milder preparation methods should be developed to enhance the photocatalytic activity.

The elevated synthesis temperature leads to a decrease in the density of surface -OH groups, which are involved in the generation of strongly oxidizing ?OH radicals. Milder preparation methods should be envisaged in the future to obtain materials with large surface areas and high density of surface -OH groups.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
The synthesis of RbLaTa2O7 layered perovskites was carried out by solid-state reaction between appropriate amounts of oxide precursors and rubidium carbonate. Two samples were prepared with different thermal treatments.

High purity reagents were used, including Rb2CO3, La2O3, and Ta2O

SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, XPS, CO2-TPD, and photocatalytic reaction setup with a 150 W short-arc Xe lamp.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
The precursors were mixed, ground, and fired at high temperatures. The photocatalytic degradation of TCE was carried out under simulated solar light.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
The concentration of TCE and Cl- was analyzed by gas chromatography and ion chromatography, respectively.
