研究目的
To evaluate the optic disc morphology changes and the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in patients with fetal alcohol syndrome.
研究成果
SD-OCT revealed significant reductions in optic disc area, rim area, optic disc diameter, and peripapillary RNFL thickness in FAS patients, with a heterogeneous pattern of loss sparing the temporal quadrant. This suggests that SD-OCT can be useful for diagnosing FAS and differentiating it from other optic neuropathies, with the temporal quadrant preservation possibly explaining relatively good visual acuities. Future studies with larger samples are needed to confirm these findings and explore functional correlations.
研究不足
The study had a small sample size (11 patients), and severe FAS cases with poor cooperation were excluded, potentially underestimating the differences. The findings may not be generalizable to all FAS populations. Additionally, the cross-sectional design limits causal inferences.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
A comparative study using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) to assess optic nerve head parameters and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) patients versus age-matched controls. The design involves cross-sectional analysis with statistical comparisons.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
11 FAS patients (22 eyes) diagnosed by the pediatric development department and 14 age-matched controls (28 eyes) with normal ophthalmological examination. Exclusion criteria included retinal diseases, diabetes, high ametropy, and inability to cooperate.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
SD-OCT Copernicus (OPTOPOL Technology SA, Poland) for imaging, slit lamp for anterior segment examination, Snellen decimal scale for BCVA, fundus photography, and IOLMaster (Carl Zeiss, Germany) for axial length measurement.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
All participants underwent ophthalmic examination including BCVA, slit lamp, retinal examination, and optic disc evaluation. SD-OCT was used with a 3D protocol for optic nerve head parameters and a circular scan for RNFL thickness. Measurements were taken and analyzed.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
Statistical analysis using StatView software (SAS Cary, NC, USA). ANOVA for group comparisons and Fisher's PLSD post-hoc test for multiple comparisons, with significance at p < 0.05. Data presented as mean ± standard deviation.
