研究目的
To overcome the problem of visual fatigue caused by low-frequency flickering stimuli in SSVEP-based BCI systems by using a single high-frequency stimulus and integrating it with an eye-tracker for improved performance.
研究成果
The Mesh Speller, integrating SSVEP-based BCI with an eye-tracker using a single high-frequency stimulus, outperformed the traditional SSVEP Speller in accuracy, ITR, and typing speed. It reduced visual fatigue and setup complexity. Future work should involve testing with a larger and more diverse population, including disabled individuals, to enhance practicality.
研究不足
The study was conducted with only nine participants, which may limit generalizability. It needs testing with more subjects, especially people with disabilities. The system's performance might be affected by user movements or environmental factors not fully addressed.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
The study designed a hybrid system (Mesh Speller) combining SSVEP-based BCI with an eye-tracker. It used a single high-frequency stimulus (30 Hz) for SSVEP and a customized calibration for the eye-tracker. Signal processing involved the Minimum Energy Combination (MEC) method for SSVEP classification and exponential weight moving average (EWMA) for eye gaze selection.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
Nine participants (six male, three female) volunteered, with written informed consent and ethical approval. Data were stored anonymously.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
Hardware included a BenQ XL2411T LCD screen, Fujitsu ESPRIMO E910 E90+ desktop computer, EyeTribe eye-tracker, g.USBamp amplifier, Ag/AgCl electrodes, and abrasive electrolytic electrode gel. Software was developed in Visual C++ for SSVEP Speller and Mesh Speller.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
Participants were seated 55-65 cm from the screen. EEG signals were recorded with electrodes at specific positions (e.g., PZ, OZ for Mesh Speller). The eye-tracker was calibrated using a customized 30-point procedure. Participants spelled a phrase using both spellers, with data collected on accuracy, ITR, time, and characters per minute.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
Data were analyzed using formulas for information transfer rate (ITR), accuracy, and other performance metrics. Statistical comparisons were made between the two spellers.
