  • Microstructure and properties of WC reinforced Ni-based composite coatings with Y <sub/>2</sub> O <sub/>3</sub> addition on titanium alloy by laser cladding

    摘要: In this study, WC reinforced Ni-based composite coatings with Y2O3 addition were deposited on Ti-6Al-4V titanium substrate by laser cladding. The phases, microstructure, microhardness and wear resistance of the composite coatings were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, microhardness tester and wear tester. The results showed that good metallurgical bonding was achieved between the composite coatings and substrate. The phases mainly were γ -Ni, TiC, TiB2, Ni3B, M23C6 and WC. Most of the WC was dissolved in small pieces of WC during the laser cladding process. The microhardness of the composite coatings was about 3 times that of the titanium substrate and the wear resistance of the composite coatings had a significant increase.

  • Surface Coatings Modulate the Differences in the Adhesion Forces of Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Cells as Detected by Single Cell Force Microscopy

    摘要: Single cell force microscopy was used to investigate the maximum detachment force (MDF) of primary neuronal mouse cells (PNCs), osteoblastic cells (MC3T3), and prokaryotic cells (Staphylococcus capitis subsp. capitis) from different surfaces after contact times of 1 to 5 seconds. Positively charged silicon nitride surfaces were coated with positively charged polyethyleneimine (PEI) or poly-D-lysine. Laminin was used as the second coating. PEI induced MDFs of the order of 5 to 20 nN, slightly higher than silicon nitride did. Lower MDFs (1 to 5 nN) were detected on PEI/laminin with the lowest on PDL/laminin. To abstract from the individual cell properties, such as size, and to obtain cell type-specific MDFs, the MDFs of each cell on the different coatings were normalized to the silicon nitride reference for the longest contact time. The differences in MDF between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells were generally of similar dimensions, except on PDL/laminin, which discriminated against the prokaryotic cells. We explain the lower MDFs on laminin by the spatial prevention of the electrostatic cell adhesion to the underlying polymers. However, PEI can form long flexible loops protruding from the surface-bound layer that may span the laminin layer and easily bind to cellular surfaces and the small prokaryotic cells. This was reflected in increased MDFs after two-second contact times on silicon nitride, whereas the two-second values were already observed after one second on PEI or PEI/laminin. We assume that the electrostatic charge interaction with the PEI loops is more important for the initial adhesion of the smaller prokaryotic cells than for eukaryotic cells.

  • Kinetic stabilization of cellulose nanocrystals in a photocurable prepolymer for application as an adhesion promoter in UV-curable coatings

    摘要: Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) at low loading levels were shown to reinforce a photocurable coating resulting in improved adhesion. A polyether polyol containing CNC at loading levels of up to 1.8 wt% was grafted with 3-isopropenyl-α,α-dimethylbenzyl isocyanate to functionalize it with a photocurable group. The nanoparticles were kinetically stabilized in the rapidly forming prepolymer of high viscosity. Photoinitiators and a difunctional reactive diluent were added to produce optically transparent coatings and free films upon irradiation by ultraviolet (UV) light. This allowed evaluation of the effects of CNC at low loading levels in a glassy polymer matrix obtained through a rapid cure system. Incorporation of CNC nanoparticles in the polymer matrix resulted in an average improvement in adhesive strength of 154% while enhancing tensile strength by an average of 16%. The technique described could be used as a new approach to reduce adhesive failure in UV-curable coatings without sacrificing their mechanical strength.

  • Highly efficient transparent nanophosphor films for tunable white light-emitting layered coatings

    摘要: Bright luminescence in rare-earth (RE) nanocrystals, so-called nanophosphors, is generally achieved by choosing a host that enable the effective excitation of the RE activator through charge or energy transfer. Although tungstate, molybdate or vanadate compounds provide the aforementioned transfer, a comparative analysis of the efficiency of such emitters remains elusive. Herein we perform a combined structural and optical analysis, which reveals that the tetragonal GdVO4 matrix gives rise to the highest efficiency among the different transparent nanophosphor films compared. Then we demonstrate that by sequential stacking of optical quality layers made of Eu3+ and Dy3+ doped nanocrystals, it is possible to attain highly transparent white light emitting coatings of tunable shade with photoluminescence quantum yields above 35%. Layering provides precise dynamic tuning of the chromaticity based on the photoexcitation wavelength dependence of the emission of the nanophosphor ensemble without altering the chemical composition of the emitters or degrading their efficiency. Total extinction of incoming radiation along with the high quantum yields achieved make these thin layered phosphors one of the most efficient transparent white converter coatings ever developed.

  • Effects of ion beam etching of fused silica substrates on the laser-induced damage properties of antireflection coatings at 355?nm

    摘要: Antire?ection (AR) coatings are deposited on UV grade fused silica substrates, which are cleaned in the dual ion beam sputtering device. Compared to ultrasonic and acid etching cleaning progress, ion beam etching improves the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of substrates and AR coatings signi?cantly at 355 nm. Ion beam etching declines the low LIDT defects drastically and removes lots of the impurity elements (Ce, Fe, K, and Na). Roughness test shows that the AR coatings and substrates with ion beam etching are very ?at and of low roughness. Ion beam etching reduces the density of deep defect from substrates greatly. Damage morphologies show double layers delamination, which is explained via calculation of layer stress. This study will be helpful for preparation of high LIDT optical coatings.

    摘要: A novel cylindrical porous media combustion-based thermophotovoltaic is proposed and experimentally studied. A mixture of methane-air is burnt at an equivalence ratio of 0.7 in a packed bed made of two layers of different alumina balls which are coated with ytterbia (Yb2O3) and erbia (Er2O3) for spectral control with gallium antimonide (GaSb) photovoltaic (PV) cells. A radiant reflector is used to increase the electrical output and the radiant efficiency. The experiments revealed it was possible to achieve a superadiabatic temperature of 1538 °C and a high radiant efficiency, 63%. Overall, this systematic analysis for lean Air/CH4 mixtures represents a new direction for TPV technology.

  • A Review on Recent Trends in Surface Coatings

    摘要: Corrosion of the components is a predominant factor which controls the life of metallic parts. Metals parts of various structures are often subjected to damage due to corrosion driven failures causing loss of functionality and dimensions. In order to reduce corrosion, there are two ways one is introducing new materials and the other is improving the existing materials by adding alloying materials or by surface coating techniques. Surface coatings are a feasible way to enhance the corrosion resistance of metallic materials, thus expanding the life span of the metal components. Aim of this paper is to draw comparison between various coating techniques and analyze which surface coating technique and coating materials improves the corrosion resistance of the materials. Further, in this review paper coat materials on the base material by mostly cold spray and plasma spray techniques. So, these two surface coating modification techniques are discussed in detail.

    摘要: Anti-reflective coatings (ARC) are commonly applied to photovoltaic (PV) modules in the solar industry to increase power and energy output. In addition to characterization of initial module power and angle of incidence modifier (IAM), it is important to verify that the expected gain is observed in commercial system operation. This analysis shows the increased performance of ARC First Solar CdTe PV modules compared to non-ARC equivalent modules in a commercial test in New South Wales, Australia. PPI analysis indicates a sustained ARC performance gain over time, suggesting good ARC durability. Detailed actual-expected analysis shows both array types performing at or above expected levels after almost 2 years in the field. ARC arrays show slightly greater benefit than predicted compared to non-ARC arrays.

  • Access to Disparate Soft Matter Materials by Curing with Two Colors of Light

    摘要: A platform technology for multimaterial photoresists that can be orthogonally cured by disparate colors of light is introduced. The resist’s photochemistry is designed such that one wavelength selectively activates the crosslinking of one set of macromolecules, while a different wavelength initiates network formation of a different set of chains. Each wavelength is thus highly selective towards a specific photoligation reaction within the resist. Critically, the shorter wavelength does not induce ligation of the longer wavelength selective species within the same resist mixture, defined as “wavelength orthogonality.” Uniquely, this dual-color addressable resist system allows generating spatially resolved soft matter materials by simply selecting the curing wavelength, thus constituting a wavelength-orthogonal multimaterial resist with applications ranging from coatings to 3D additive manufacturing of multimaterial architectures.

  • Cross-linked lignin coatings produced by UV light and SF6 plasma treatments

    摘要: Lignin is one of the most abundant macromolecules in vascular plants and has been studied for many years due to its high availability and low cost, regarding that lignin is the main by-product of the paper pulping process, and also typically burned as fuel. Despite that, lignin has only a few industrial applications. In this study, we found a simple method for preparing well-defined lignin surfaces. Lignin was extracted from sugar cane bagasse by Soda pulping and its coatings were prepared using solutions with different solvents on various substrates (silicon wafers, paper, steel and glass) by spin-coating. Two methods were tested in order to promote cross-linking on the surface of lignin coatings: SF6 plasma treatment and ultra-violet radiation. Both treatments reduced the amount of hydroxyl groups on the surface leading to more stable, cross-linked coatings as observed by FTIR and thermal analysis. Ultra-violet light radiation turned lignin coatings hydrophilic while stable super-hydrophobic lignin coatings were obtained using SF6 plasma.
