  • Scaling up electrodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting: fabrication process and performance of 40 cm2 LaTiO2N photoanodes

    摘要: A scalable process for particle-based photoanodes is developed. The electrodes are versatilely made of photocatalytically active semiconductor particles, here LaTiO2N, and optionally coated with co-catalysts and protecting components, all immobilized on a conducting substrate. The involved fabrication steps are restricted to scalable processes like electrophoretic deposition, annealing in air and dip coating. Special care is taken to ensure charge transport in between particles and to the substrate by adding conducting connectors. Adapting the fabrication steps, the geometrical electrode dimension is increased from the size of a typical lab electrode of 1 cm2 to 40 cm2. The quality of the scale up process is characterized by comparing the photoanodes in terms of thickness, light absorption properties and morphology. For several compositions, the electrochemical performance of both electrode sizes is assessed by measuring photocurrents and Faraday efficiencies. The comparison revealed a complex upscaling behavior and showed that photoelectrode size affected performance already on the 0.1 m scale.

    摘要: The main point of this work is the comparison between linear and geometrically non-linear elasticity modeling in the field of piezoelectric actuators fabricated at the micro-scale. Manufacturing limitations such as non-symmetrical lamination of the structure or minimum length scale are taken into account during the optimization process. The robust approach implemented in the problem also reduces the sensitivity of the designs to small manufacturing errors.

  • A Novel Hybrid Removal Technology for High-Aspect-Ratio SU-8 Micromolds in ECF (Electro-Conjugate Fluid) Micropumps Fabrication by UV-LIGA

    摘要: Previously, we have developed ECF micropumps with triangular prism and slit electrode pairs (TPSEs) fabricated by the UV-LIGA. However, the previous KMPR molds have a limit to attain higher-aspect-ratio TPSEs. As a promising substitute, the ultrathick SU-8 molds are preferable for the TPSEs due to higher-aspect-ratio ability, but their difficult removal remains an annoying problem. To solve this problem, we first propose a novel hybrid removal method combining CO2 laser engraving with O2/CF4 plasma to achieve the fast, non-swelling, and complete removal of ultrathick SU-8 micromolds for higher-aspect-ratio TPSEs. The CO2 laser engraving is utilized as the main process to remove most SU-8, while the O2/CF4 plasma is adopted as the post-treatment to remove the remaining SU-8. To gather the proper fabrication conditions, we quantitatively analyze the effects of laser power, laser scan speed, and laser-pass numbers on the SU-8 ablation thickness. We successfully fabricated TPSEs of 590 μm and 970 μm in height by selectively removing SU-8 micromolds of 620 and 1100 μm in thickness. This achievement confirmed that our hybrid removal technology could remove the crosslinked SU-8 effectively and efficiently. We further experimentally proved the fascinating potential of our hybrid removal in improving the output performance of ECF micropumps. This promising hybrid removal opens the door to the easier fabrication of ultrathick metallic microstructures by UV-LIGA.

  • Non-parametric Physiological Classification of Retinal Ganglion Cells in the Mouse Retina

    摘要: Retinal ganglion cells, the sole output neurons of the retina, exhibit surprising diversity. A recent study reported over 30 distinct types in the mouse retina, indicating that the processing of visual information is highly parallelised in the brain. The advent of high density multi-electrode arrays now enables recording from many hundreds to thousands of neurons from a single retina. Here we describe a method for the automatic classification of large-scale retinal recordings using a simple stimulus paradigm and a spike train distance measure as a clustering metric. We evaluate our approach using synthetic spike trains, and demonstrate that major known cell types are identified in high-density recording sessions from the mouse retina with around 1,000 retinal ganglion cells. A comparison across different retinas reveals substantial variability between preparations, suggesting pooling data across retinas should be approached with caution. As a parameter-free method, our approach is broadly applicable for cellular physiological classification in all sensory modalities.

  • Dopamine Binding and Analysis in Undiluted Human Serum and Blood by the RNA-Aptamer Electrode

    摘要: Specific analysis of such neurotransmitters as dopamine by the aptamer electrodes in biological fluids is detrimentally affected by non-specific adsorption of media, particularly pronounced at positive charges of the electrode surface at which dopamine oxidizes. Here, we show that dopamine analysis at the RNA-aptamer/cysteamine-modified electrodes is strongly inhibited in undiluted human serum and blood due to non-specific interfacial adsorption of serum and blood components. We demonstrate that non-specific adsorption of serum proteins (but not of blood components) could be minimized when analysis is performed in a flow and injections of serum samples are followed by washing steps in a phosphate buffer solution (PBS) carrier. Under those conditions, the dopamine-aptamer binding affinity in whole human serum of (1.9±0.3)×104 M-1 s-1 was comparable to (3.7±0.3)×104 M-1 s-1 found in PBS, and the dopamine oxidation signal linearly depended on the dopamine concentration, providing the sensitivity of analysis of 73 ± 3 nA μM-1 cm-2 and the LOD of 114 ± 8 nM. The flow-injection apatmer-electrode system was used for direct analysis of basal levels of dopamine in undiluted human serum samples, without using any physical separators (membranes) or filtration procedures. The results suggest a simple strategy for combatting biosurface fouling most pronounced at positive electrode potentials and assist in designing more efficient antifouling strategies for biomedical applications.

  • Enhancing the performance of photo-bioelectrochemical fuel cell using graphene oxide/cobalt/polypyrrole composite modified photo-biocathode in the presence of antibiotic

    摘要: Photo-bioelectrochemical fuel cell (PBFC) holds a great potential to harvest sustainable electrical energy from wastewater, but low power output limits its applications due to poor electrochemical performance of photo-biocathode. Additionally, antibiotics are ubiquitous in wastewater streams, but little is known regarding their effects on photo-biocathode performance of the PBFC. This study attempted to increase power output of PBFC through improvement of the photo-biocathode performance by modifying the biocathode with graphene oxide/cobalt/polypyrrole (GO/Co/PPy) composite in the presence of oxytetracycline. The GO/Co/PPy composite modified electrode fabricated by one-step electropolymerization method exhibited more excellent catalytic activity toward oxygen reduction compared to Co-alone and Co/PPy modified electrode. The PBFC with GO/Co/PPy composite modified biocathode produced a maximum power density of 19 mW/m2, which was almost 4-fold higher than that produced with the bare biocathode (4.9 mW/m2) due to improved bio-electrocatalytic performance of the bicathode by the GO/Co/PPy composite. The maximum power density of the PBFC was further increased 4.6 (105.5 mW/m2), 3.7 (88.7 mW/m2), 2.9 (74.6 mW/m2) and 1.9 (56 mW/m2) fold by exposure to 5, 10, 20, and 50 mg/L OTC, respectively. The further increases in power was due to reduced cathode's charge transfer resistance using degradation products of OTC as mediators and OTC-stimulated growth of species with extracellular electron transfer ability. However, the photosynthesis and growth of alga was negatively affected by OTC concentration higher than 10 mg/L, resulting performance deterioration of bicathode.

  • CVD diamond film detectors for α particles with a new electrode structure of reduced graphene oxide/Au

    摘要: (111)-oriented poly-crystalline diamond ?lms (PCDs) have been deposited on Si substrates by MPCVD technology. The new electrode structure of reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/Au was successfully fabricated onto PCDs. Using the circular transmission line model (CTLM), the contact resistance of 6.6 Ω cm?2 was obtained for RGO/Au electrode on PCD surface, which was notably lower than that of 97.4 Ω cm?2 for Ti/Pt/Au electrode. Furthermore, two detectors with these two type electrodes were made respectively. The dark current, photocurrent and energy resolution of these two detectors under 5.5 MeV α particles irradiation from a 241Am source were observed. The results demonstrated that the fabrication of RGO/Au electrode onto PCD can realize a ?ne ohmic contact. The photocurrent of 58.7 nA for the detector with RGO/Au electrode had higher values than that of 8.8 nA for the detector with Ti/Pt/Au electrode at the bias voltage of 100 V respectively. Due to the realization of good contact on PCD surface with RGO/Au electrode, the energy resolution of 11.9% for the detector with RGO/Au electrode better than that of 24% for the detector with Ti/Pt/Au electrode can be obtained. Fabrication of the RGO/Au electrode on PCD may provide a feasible way to improve its detection performance under α particles irradiation.

  • Recent progress on jet printing of oxide-based thin film transistors

    摘要: Among the printing technologies for printed electronics, jet printing-based methods provide promising solutions to the fabrication of oxide-based thin film transistors (TFTs) for flexible and non-flexible electronics. Their direct patterning capability, non-vacuum and solution-based material formation process have attracted a significant amount of interests from both the academic and industry sectors. This topical review summarizes recent progress on the development of jet printed metal oxide TFTs with special attention given to the surface related effects, ink preparation and post-printing treatments, which are the critical aspects of obtaining high performance printed TFTs. Firstly, a brief introduction is made on the state of art jet printing technologies: the piezoelectric/thermal inkjet printing, the newly emerged electro-hydrodynamic jet printing and aerosol jet printing. Then, surface related issues of wettability and coffee-ring effect are discussed. At last, jet printing of oxide-based TFTs is reviewed according to the classification of printed material types: metal oxide semiconductors, gate dielectrics and conductive electrodes. The extensive review of low temperature annealing methods made this work particular interesting to the printing of oxide-based TFTs on flexible substrates.

  • Signal-on Electrochemiluminescence Aptasensor for Bisphenol A based on Hybridization Chain Reaction and Electrically Heated Electrode

    摘要: A simple and sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor has been developed for bisphenol A (BPA) detection. The capture DNA (CDNA) was modified on the heated indium-tin-oxide (ITO) working electrode surface firstly and then hybridized with BPA aptamer to form double strand DNA (dsDNA). The presence of target can cause the releasing of aptamer from the electrode surface since the aptamer prefers to switch its configuration to combine with BPA. Subsequently, the free CDNA will induce hybridization chain reaction (HCR) to produce long dsDNA on the electrode surface. Ru(phen)3 2+ can integrate into the grooves of dsDNA to act as an ECL reagent, thus enhanced ECL signal can be detected. The temperature control during the processes of target recognition and HCR were realized through the heated electrode instead of the bulk solution heating. Furthermore, the performance of the ECL aptasensor can be further enhanced at elevated electrode temperature. Under the optimized conditions, the ECL intensity of the system has a linear relationship with the logarithm of BPA concentration in the range of 2.0 pM-50 nM. The limit of detection (LOD) at 55 °C (electrode surface temperature) was calculated to be 1.5 pM, which was approximately 6.5-fold lower than that at 25 °C. The proposed biosensor has been applied to detect the BPA in drink samples with satisfactory results.

  • Integration of fluorescence imaging and electrochemical biosensing for both qualitative location and quantitative detection of cancer cells

    摘要: In this work, DNA-templated silver nanoclusters (DNA-AgNCs) with unique fluorescent and electrochemical properties are prepared as dual signal probes for both qualitative imaging and quantitative detection of cancer cells in an integrated system. ITO electrode that has good light transmittance and electric conductivity is employed as a substrate for dual analysis of cancer cells. ITO electrode is firstly modified by AS1141 aptamer, which could selectively bind to nucleolin overexpressed on the surface of a model breast cancer cell, MCF-7 cell line. The composite of mucin 1 antibody (anti-MUC1) and DNA-AgNCs then binds to MUC1 on the surface of captured MCF-7 cell, forming a sandwich-like structure. Therefore, our method allows noninvasive fluorescence imaging and amplified electrochemical detection using a single labeling platform, providing a biocompatible and highly specific method for adequate analysis of cancer cells. Experimental results demonstrate that strong red fluorescence of DNA-AgNCs clearly displays the loading of cancer cells on ITO electrode after dual recognition, and amplified electrochemical signals of DNA-AgNCs enable improved sensitivity toward quantitative analysis with a detection limit of 3 cells.
