  • Direct Ultraviolet Laser-Induced Reduction of Disulfide Bonds in Insulin and Vasopressin

    摘要: Ultraviolet (UV) light has been shown to induce reduction of disulfide bonds in solution. The photoreduction is proposed to be a result of electron donation from excited Tyr or Trp residues. In this work, a powerful UV femtosecond laser was used to generate photoreduced products, while the hypothesis of Tyr/Trp mediation was studied with spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. With limited irradiation times of 3 min or less at 280 nm, the laser-induced reduction in arginine vasopressin and human insulin led to significant yields of ~3% stable reduced product. The photogenerated thiols required acidic pH for stabilization, while neutral pH primarily caused scrambling and trisulfide formation. Interestingly, there was no direct evidence that Tyr/Trp mediation was a required criterion for the photoreduction of disulfide bonds. Intermolecular electron transfer remained a possibility for insulin but was ruled out for vasopressin. We propose that an additional mechanism should be increasingly considered in UV light-induced reduction of disulfide bonds in solution, in which a single UV photon is directly absorbed by the disulfide bond.

  • Qualitative and Quantitative Distinction of <i>ortho</i> -, <i>meta</i> -, and <i>para</i> -Fluorotoluene by Means of Chirped Femtosecond Laser Ionization

    摘要: Femtosecond-laser ionization mass spectrometry (fs-LIMS) is demonstrated to be a powerful analytical method providing access to the qualitative distinction of structural isomers of ortho-, meta-, and para-fluorotoluene. The key point of the approach presented is a systematic variation of the spectral phase of the fs-laser pulses, which characteristically affects the fragmentation pattern observed in the mass spectra. Variation of the linear chirp parameter is also helpful for rationalizing the fragmentation mechanism. Ultimately two ternary mixtures of the three title isomers are quantitatively analyzed in situ with an accuracy of 5% for the molar fractions.

  • Investigation of a Bragg Grating-Based Fabrya??Perot Structure Inscribed Using Femtosecond Laser Micromachining in an Adiabatic Fiber Taper

    摘要: This paper presents the fabrication of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based Fabry–Perot (FP) structure (7 mm total length) in an adiabatic fiber taper, investigates its strain and temperature characteristics, and compares the sensing characteristics with a standard polyimide coated FBG sensor. Firstly, a simulation of the said structure is presented, followed by the fabrication of an adiabatic fiber taper having the outer diameter reduced to 70 μm (core diameter to 4.7 μm). Next, the sensing structure, composed of two identical uniform FBG spaced apart by a small gap, is directly inscribed point-by-point using infrared femtosecond laser (fs-laser) micromachining. Lastly, the strain and temperature behavior for a range up to 3400 με and 225 ?C, respectively, are investigated for the fabricated sensor and the FBG, and compared. The fabricated sensor attains a higher strain sensitivity (2.32 pm/με) than the FBG (0.73 pm/με), while both the sensors experience similar sensitivity to temperature (8.85 pm/?C). The potential applications of such sensors include continuous health monitoring where precise strain detection is required.

  • An investigation of aluminum nitride thin films patterned by femtosecond laser

    摘要: In this study, a femtosecond laser etching method is proposed to pattern an aluminum nitride (AlN) ?lm, grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition on sapphire. Via control of typical pulse energies, the designed pattern was precisely written in the AlN ?lm. The morphology of the patterned structures was characterized using a three-dimensional laser scanning confocal microscope and a scanning electron microscope; crystalline quality and ?lm strain were analyzed using a Raman spectrometer and a transmission electron microscope. The results indicate that consistent morphologies were achieved with only slight changes to the crystalline quality. The tensile stress of the AlN ?lm was released, and the ?lm surface was slightly compressed after laser patterning. Thus, femtosecond etching has the potential to be an in situ patterning method during ?lm growth.

  • Asymmetric Response Opto-Electronic Device Based on Femtosecond- Laser-Irradiated Perovskite

    摘要: We have explored an asymmetric opto-electronic response of FormamidinePb(I0.8Br0.2)3 perovskite device irradiated by a femtosecond (fs) laser at different laser fluence values. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra indicated a blue shift from 772 nm (1.606 eV) to 745 nm (1.664 eV) and more than 80% quenching of the irradiated perovskite. The blue shift of the PL spectra can be attributed to compositional variation, which was confirmed through elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction. Two distinct characteristic time constants ranging from 193-46 ps and 1.9-0.61 ns were obtained by using fs transient absorption spectroscopy. The fast one represents recombination at the interface, whereas the slow one represents band-to-band recombination in the interior of the grain. Interestingly, after the perovskite was irradiated by femtosecond laser with appropriate laser fluence (0.135 J/cm2), an asymmetric I-V characteristic was achieved, which should be resulted from irreversible electric domain deflection. Due to the electron-phonon scattering induced by defect, the degree of asymmetry was sensitive to illumination power. As the photosensitive asymmetric I-V characteristics have a bearing on its photo-electric properties, the findings would be of value in photodiode, memories and other photo-electric devices.

  • Gate Tunable Symmetric Bipolar Junction Transistor Fabricated via Femtosecond Laser Processing

    摘要: Two-dimensional (2D) bipolar junction transistor (BJT) with van der Waals heterostructures plays an important role in the development of future nanoelectronics. Herein, a convenient method is introduced for fabricating a symmetric bipolar junction transistor (SBJT) constructed with black phosphorus and MoS2 with femtosecond laser processing. This SBJT exhibits good bidirectional current amplification thanks to its symmetric structure. Next, we place a top gate on one side of the SBJT to change the difference in the major carrier concentration between the emitter and collector in order to further investigate the effect of electrostatic doping on the device’s performance. The SBJT can also act as a gate tunable phototransistor with good photodetectivity and photocurrent gain of β ~ 21. Scanning photocurrent images are used to determine the mechanism governing photocurrent amplification in the phototransistor. These results promote the development of the applications of multifunctional nanoelectronics based on 2D materials.

  • Uneven Crystallization of a-Si and a-Si: Ag Thin Films Irradiated by Femtosecond Laser

    摘要: The crystallization of both a-Si and a-Si:Ag thin films by femtosecond laser irradiation has been studied recently. It is found that there is an uneven crystallization in both amorphous thin films by means of optical microscopy and laser Raman spectroscopy respectively. The crystallization in each pulse spot area is gradually weakened from the center to the edge along with the energy dispersion of laser irradiation. The laser induced crystallization in a-Si films begins early and develops more extensively compared to that in a-Si:Ag thin films, and Ag nanoparticles inhibits somehow the crystallization of a-Si in a-Si:Ag films.

  • Femtosecond laser modification of 6Ha??SiC crystals for waveguide devices

    摘要: We report on optical waveguides produced by a femtosecond laser in 6H–SiC crystals. Their guiding properties have been investigated at a wavelength of 1064 nm, and confocal micro-Raman images have been obtained at an excitation wavelength of 532 nm. The results demonstrate that mode pro?les can be tailored by the adjustment of writing parameters, and the blueshift of the spectrum (at around 787.05 cm?1) mainly takes place in the irradiated areas. From images of Raman intensity and spectral shift, it is obvious that optical properties in guiding regions are well preserved. These waveguides may have potential applications in integrated optics and quantum photonics.

  • Morphological characteristics of nanoholes induced by single-shot femtosecond laser ablation of borates and aluminate silicates

    摘要: Single-shot femtosecond laser ablation experiments with linearly and circularly polarized light were conducted in order to investigate the morphological characteristics of surface nanostructures in lithium borate crystals and glasses, a strontium borate crystal, lanthanide containing borate crystals, and aluminate silicate crystals: Li2B4O7 (LTB) and LiB3O5 (LBO) crystals and Li2O?2B2O3 (LTB) and Li2O?3B2O3 (LBO) glasses; SrB4O7 (SBO) crystal; Li6Gd(BO3)3 (LGB) and LaSc3(BO3)4 (LSB) crystals; and Ca2Al2SiO7 (CAS) and CaSrAl2SiO7 (CSAS) crystals. In the present study, the material and laser polarization dependance of the morphology of nanoholes was examined in these crystals and glasses. A single nanohole or two holes (a primary hole and a secondary hole) were observed in the borate and aluminate silicate crystals. The size of the nanohole is not restricted by the diffraction limit but instead is dependent on the laser fluence and the materials. It is suggested that the formation of these secondary nanoholes in the studied crystals is attributed to a spontaneous reshaping of the incoming Gaussian pulse into a Gaussian–Bessel pulse. In the LTB and LBO crystals, nanoholes (both primary and secondary holes) with subwavelength sides exhibit a quadrilateral (approximately square or rectangular) morphology, regardless of linear or circular polarization. The sides of the quadrilateral nanoholes lie approximately in the {h h 0} planes on the LTB crystal and in the ({h 0 0} and {0 0 l}) planes on the LBO crystal. We found that the nanohole morphology did not reflect the spatial distribution of the laser intensity. These phenomena were the first observations on the anisotropic morphology of nanoholes. These morphologies do not correspond to the circular symmetric pattern of the Gaussian intensity distribution of the incoming laser beam. This is contrary to the expectations based on the generally accepted laser ablation mechanism. The quadrilateral nanoholes could be an inherent morphology in the LTB and LBO crystals. The morphology of the network structure in their quadrilateral holes in the LTB and LBO crystals is considered to reflect the continuous BO3 and/or BO4 3? 5? respective tetragonal or orthorhombic unit cells, in which self-tapped excitons are formed in an initial process under multiphoton excitation. In contrast, the SBO, LGB, LSB, CAS, and CSAS crystals and the LTB and LBO glasses exhibit circular nanoholes with subwavelength diameters independent of the laser polarization, the structure, or the composition. The isotropic morphology of nanoholes in these samples reflects the circular pattern of the Gaussian intensity profile of the focused laser beam.

  • Extrusion of Femtosecond Laser-Implanted Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segments in Keratoconic Eyes: Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Clinical Outcomes

    摘要: Purpose. To evaluate the prevalence, possible risk factors, and clinical results of femtosecond laser implanted intrastromal corneal ring segment (ICRS) extrusion in keratoconic eyes. Patients and Methods. This is a retrospective observational study evaluating 333 eyes of 269 patients who were subjected to femtosecond laser-implanted Keraring ICRS in the Sohag Refractive Center, Sohag, Egypt, from January 2014 to January 2019. The study included eyes with channels created by a femtosecond laser (60 kHz IntraLase femtosecond system; Advanced Medical Optics, Santa Ana, California, USA) with implantation of Keraring intrastromal corneal ring segments (Mediphacos, Belo Horizonte, Brazil). Patient data and causes of Keraring extrusions were identi?ed as being those rings that migrated or showed melting of the cornea with no other reason which required segment removal. Results. Seven eyes were found to ?t the criteria of ring extrusion (2.1%) out of the 333 eyes which had Keraring implantation. All extruded rings were from patients with keratoconus grade 3, with eccentric cones, and with femtosecond creation of the tunnel. Four eyes belonging to 3 patients (57.1%) had a history of vernal Keratoconjunctivitis, yet they did not show signs of activity at the time of implantation. They reported excessive rubbing just before they presented with conjunctival hyperemia and foreign body sensation. Five eyes (71.4%) showed chronic sun exposure. The mean minimal corneal thickness was 401.85 μm (range 384–420 μm), while the mean maximum keratometry was 61 D (range 55.18–68.96 D). Most of the extruded rings had large arcs. Six eyes had crosslinking (CXL) at the same session of the Keraring implantation. The simultaneous CXL treatment is considered as a possible signi?cant risk factor for ring extrusion. Conclusion. ICRS is an e?ective reversible option for patients with keratoconus who are intolerant to hard contact lenses, yet the choice of cases and ring segments is mandatory for satisfactory results. Moreover, meticulous history taking and examination reduces the incidence of complications including extrusion.
