  • Detection measures for visual inspection of X-ray images of passenger baggage

    摘要: In visual inspection tasks, such as airport security and medical screening, researchers often use the detection measures d' or A' to analyze detection performance independent of response tendency. However, recent studies that manipulated the frequency of targets (target prevalence) indicate that da with a slope parameter of 0.6 is more valid for such tasks than d' or A'. We investigated the validity of detection measures (d', A', and da) using two experiments. In the first experiment, 31 security officers completed a simulated X-ray baggage inspection task while response tendency was manipulated directly through instruction. The participants knew half of the prohibited items used in the study from training, whereas the other half were novel, thereby establishing two levels of task difficulty. The results demonstrated that for both levels, d' and A' decreased when the criterion became more liberal, whereas da with a slope parameter of 0.6 remained constant. Eye-tracking data indicated that manipulating response tendency affected the decision component of the inspection task rather than search errors. In the second experiment, 124 security officers completed another simulated X-ray baggage inspection task. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves based on confidence ratings provided further support for da, and the estimated slope parameter was 0.5. Consistent with previous findings, our results imply that d' and A' are not valid measures of detection performance in X-ray image inspection. We recommend always calculating da with a slope parameter of 0.5 in addition to d' to avoid potentially wrong conclusions if ROC curves are not available.

    摘要: We developed an ultrasonic inspection technique using a pulse compression method for detecting bonding defects with interfaces of stacked wafers. This technique can detect the minute echoes reflected from the bonding interfaces by computing the correlation function between transmitted and received signals. We designed a measurement condition for pulse compression with a transmitted signal and took an ultrasonic measurement of a 3-layer stacked sample. We compared the defect detection sensitivity of the pulse compression method with the ultrasonic inspection using pulse waves. The experimental results showed that the noise of an ultrasonic image was reduced and minute defects could be detected by applying developed method.

    摘要: 2D multi-view X-ray imaging technology is widely used for security screening of hold baggage at airports. Newer technology is based on 3D CT imaging. Such systems offer the possibility to rotate a bag around 360 degrees. With the transition from 2D multi-view to advanced CT imaging, the question arises whether airport security officers (screeners) need the same visual-cognitive abilities when visually inspecting X-ray images of hold baggage. This study investigated the relationship between visual-cognitive abilities and visual inspection performance of screeners. Screeners conducted a computer-based visual cognitive test battery (VCTB) and a simulated hold baggage screening task with 2D and 3D imaging. We found that aspects of processing speed and visual processing correlated significantly with visual inspection performance of screeners using 2D imaging technology. In comparison, performance of screeners that visually inspected 3D images showed less correlations with the VCTB. These results indicate that with the expected change from 2D to 3D imaging technology in airport security, visual-cognitive requirements of the screeners might change. Therefore, further studies need to elucidate in more detail what visual-cognitive skills future 3D screeners need as it could affect personnel selection and development.

    摘要: Flexible pipes are used as risers to carry oil and gas from sub-sea wells to Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessels. Due to the harsh nature of the environment, these risers are subject to fatigue over their lifetime. It is important, as part of their integrity management, that regular in-service monitoring is undertaken to track how the asset ages. Current inspection methods for flexible risers are limited. Only radiography can inspect the multiple layers within a flexible riser to produce a volumetric inspection. Automated underwater digital radiography improves on traditional radiography by allowing a shorter inspection time. This paper presents the design and development of a new automated, underwater digital radiography inspection system prototype to survey flexible risers at depths of 100m. This is a cost effective solution using a commercially available underwater Gamma radiation source holder and a high definition, linear digital radiography detector housed in a submersible vessel. The sub-sea deployment of a linear detector for underwater inspection of flexible risers is reported for the first time. The use of a linear detector array offers greater sea depth capability, in a smaller package, and the ability to cope with the high radiation energy demands of the Gamma source compared to flat panel detector solutions. Deployment has been achieved by implementation of a bespoke robotic scanning system that can accurately control the source and detector motion. The prototype was mounted on a flexible riser during shallow water sea trials. Preliminary results are presented which show that the internal inner and outer tensile armour layers in the riser have been successfully imaged.

  • Photovoltaic Module Reliability || Failure Analysis Tools

    摘要: Regardless of whether a module has degraded from field exposure or accelerated stress testing, it is important to understand what has actually changed within the module that led to lost peak power. If we want to use the results to improve the module construction so that future modules will not degrade, we must understand what particular changes have occurred. In this chapter, we will explore some of the methods used to better understand what has gone wrong within the module. Methods reviewed include, analysis of the I–V parameters, measurement of performance at different irradiances, visual inspection, Infrared (IR) Inspection, Electroluminescence (EL) and evaluation of adhesion. Each will be discussed in the subsections that follow.

    摘要: In the production line, Inspection and Quality Control are essential to maintain the quality of the products. Same as the manufacturing process, the process of quality checking should also be automatic [1]. In addition to automation in quality checking, the process needs to be simple, fast, accurate and cost-effective. ”Machine vision is the technology and methods used to provide imaging-based automatic inspection and analysis [2].” However, Re?ective Surface of the object puts some limitations on traditional methods of machine vision. This research paper focuses on the development of a simple and accurate 3D measuring system for the inspection of re?ective surface objects. The idea is to combine the concepts of stereo vision and sheet of light techniques. The main advantage of this method is that it overcomes the limitations of traditional methods and works robustly in ambient lighting condition. In this paper, we described a number of experiments carried out on different shapes and sizes of re?ective surface objects using the proposed method. The qualitative and quantitative reconstructed 3D pro?les of different shapes of re?ective surface objects are shown. In the end, the results are compared with the ground truth three-dimensional model of the acquited objects for accuracy evaluation.

  • Analysis of Seasonal Aspects of Nebulosity on the Project of Fixed Photovoltaic Installations at the City of Bel??m, Brazil

    摘要: In this paper, we adopt the coded aperture technique to the alignment process for industrial machinery. As a special setting for assembly and inspection, such machinery uses an illumination of narrow wavelength range for imaging with less aberration. This leads to significant influence of light diffraction on the image restoration. Although the diffraction was treated as negligible in most previous studies of coded aperture since they were carried out for natural images, the aperture patterns of them do not achieve enough accuracy for the alignment. We optimize the aperture pattern by performing a simulation of light diffraction, and we experimentally show that it achieves better performance in the alignment.

    摘要: A novel algorithm is presented in this paper for solder paste inspection. The proposed methodology is based on a specially designed directional LED lighting to highlight the geometrical features of the solder paste block. Solder paste inspection and shape reconstruction are then carried out based on the highlighted shape features. An algorithm for 3D reconstruction of solder paste is developed. The process is carried out by calculating a set of surface heights for the solder paste block. The estimated shape of the solder paste block is represented by the calculated set of surface heights. To improve the accuracy of the estimation, parameter optimization has been carried out to search for an optimal set of algorithm parameters using the actual solder paste shape.

  • 3D Optical Measuring and Laser Technologies for Science and Industry

    摘要: Modern industry and science take novel 3D optical measuring systems and laser technologies with high resolution. For solving their actual problems we have developed the family of the optical measuring systems and technologies. Peculiarities of 3D image formation under partially coherent illumination using constructive calculation method are given. The optical methods and system for 3D dimensional inspection of ceramic parts are presented. The performances of 3D super resolution optical low-coherent micro-/nanoprofilometer are given. Using atomic perfectly-smooth mirror as a reference object, the breakthrough in-depth measurement with 20 picometers was achieved. The newest results in the field of laser technologies for high-precision synthesis of microstructures by updated image generator using the semiconductor laser are presented. The measuring systems and the laser image generator have been tested by the customers and are used in different branches of industry and science.
