摘要: This paper focuses on a performance analysis of single-walled-carbon-nanotube / liquid crystal classifiers produced by evolution in materio. A new confidence measure is proposed in this paper. It is different from statistical tools commonly used to evaluate the performance of classifiers in that it is based on physical quantities extracted from the composite and related to its state. Using this measure, it is confirmed that in an un-trained state, ie: before being subjected to an algorithm-controlled evolution, the carbon-nanotube-based composites classify data at random. The training, or evolution, process brings these composites into a state where the classification is no longer random. Instead, the classifiers generalise well to unseen data and the classification accuracy remains stable across tests. The confidence measure associated with the resulting classifier’s accuracy is relatively high at the classes’ boundaries, which is consistent with the problem formulation.

Electrically switchable light transmittance of epoxy-mercaptan polymer/nematic liquid crystal composites with controllable microstructures
摘要: In this paper, we report the design, preparation and properties of epoxy-mercaptan polymer/nematic liquid crystal (LC) composites with electrically switchable optical transmittance. It is found that the polymer microstructure can be regulated from porous structure to microspheres or beads by appropriately modulating the curing temperature, the molecular structure of mercaptan, as well as the compositions of epoxy, mercaptan and nematic LC host. Under an external electric field, the thin films based on such composites can switch from opaque to transparent. The electro-optical performance is found to be highly dependent on the polymer microstructures and the optimum characteristics can be achieved in the composite with a microstructure of smaller microspheres. The possible mechanism for the formation of polymer microspheres and the effects of the microstructures on the electro-optical characteristics of the composites are also discussed. This work is expected to provide an efficient way to control the microstructure of epoxy/mercaptan polymer and develop the composites with switchable optical transmittances for both civil and military applications.

Improvement of the third order nonlinear optical properties of nematic liquid crystal under the influence of different compositional percentage of doped SWCNT and the external electric field
摘要: In this research, the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) was doped with varying concentration (0-1 % wt.) of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) at room temperature to study the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of E5CN7@CNT cell.The third order NLO properties such as the nonlinear susceptibility, the nonlinear refraction (NLR) and the nonlinear absorption (NLA) were determined by using Z-scan techniques. The nonlinear studies have been done using a continuous wave (CW) He: Ne laser at 632.8 nm.Doping SWCNTs to eutectic uniaxial NLC (E5CN7) enhanced the third order nonlinear susceptibility, ??(3) and consequently the nonlinearity properties of composite systems improved.It is found that at lower concentration of CNTs (c< 0.75 % wt.), the third order nonlinear susceptibility are increased, but for concentration 0. 5<c<1 % wt., the third order nonlinear susceptibility are decreased. The negative sign of the observed NLR index, indicates that the E5CN7@CNT exhibits self-defocusing type optical nonlinearity. The two photon absorption (TPA) behavior, corresponding to negative sign NLA of samples. The reorientation of samples molecules amplifies upon the application of electric field, then nonlinearity increases.

Simulating terahertz absorption of fluorinated phenylacetylene biphenyl liquid crystal molecules
摘要: Based on the density functional theory, ten kinds of fluoro-substituted liquid crystal derivative molecules, 4-butyl-4’-[(4-butylphenyl)acetylene]biphenyl, are simulated using Gaussian09 package with Opt+Freq optimization type and B3LYP/6-311g basis set. Comparing the substituted position and number of fluorine atoms, the absorption in terahertz region is discussed. Because measurement data of liquid crystal material absorption is lacking, we can only compare in the range of 0.3?3 THz. The results show that the calculation results have the same trend as the experimental measurement absorption curve of related literature. As a conclusion, our calculations can better reflect the absorption of molecular materials and provide effective suggestions for the design and synthesis of related molecules.

Phototunable <i>Morpho</i> Butterfly Microstructures Modified by Liquid Crystal Polymers
摘要: The unique hierarchical microstructures of the Morpho butterfly wing (MBW) exhibit angle independent blue iridescence. Biomimicking these microstructures and turning them into functional photonic crystals (PhCs) have fascinated scientists yet remain challenging. Here, a phototunable PhC is fabricated by depositing the azobenzene-containing linear liquid crystal polymer (LLCP) onto the MBW template. Thanks to the excellent mechanical properties and deformability of LLCP, the generated 3D bilayer microstructures demonstrate hierarchical deformation upon UV light irradiation, leading to a blueshift of the reflection peak (70 nm) and a remarkable change of reflectance (40%). This phototunable PhC may have potential applications in pigments, cosmetics, and sensors.

P-12.2: Active Matrix Field Sequential Color Electrically Suppressed Helix Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal for High Resolution Displays
摘要: In this article, we disclose a 3-inch 250ppi active matrix field sequential color electrically suppressed ferroelectric liquid crystal (ESHFLC) display. ESHFLC’s ultra-fast response time (~10μs at 6.67V/μm) enables the display resolution to be tripled via field sequential color technique. Photo-alignment technology provides ESHFLC with optimal anchoring energy which contributes to a high contrast ratio over 10K:1. Specific 3T1C pixel circuit is designed to convert the analog signal to pulse width modulation. Thus the field sequential color ESHFLC display is achieved on LTPS TFT panel. With the delivered prototype, we successfully demonstrate the active matrix FSC ESHFLC integrated display system. We believe this display may replace IPS or FFS in the near future for portable mobile market. Moreover, high resolution FSC ESHFLC can find more applications in emerging virtual reality displays.

Cylindrical nematic liquid crystal shell: effect of saddle-splay elasticity
摘要: This study introduces cylindrical nematic liquid crystal (LC) shells. Shells as confinement can provide soft matter with intriguing topology and geometry. Indeed, in spherical shells of LCs, rich defect structures have been reported. Avoiding the inherent Plateau–Rayleigh instability of cylindrical liquid–liquid interfaces, we realize the cylindrical nematic LC shell by two different methods: the phase separation in the nematic–isotropic coexistence phase and a cylindrical cavity with a glass rod suspended in the middle. Specifically, the director configurations of lyotropic chromonic LCs (LCLCs) in the cylindrical shell and their energetics are investigated theoretically and experimentally. Unusual elastic properties of LCLCs, i.e., a large saddle-splay modulus, and a shell geometry with both concave and convex curvatures, result in a double-twist director configuration.

High Thermal Diffusivity in Thermally Treated Filamentous Virus-Based Assemblies with a Smectic Liquid Crystalline Orientation
摘要: Polymers are generally considered thermal insulators because the amorphous arrangement of the polymeric chains reduces the mean free path of heat-conducting phonons. Recent studies reveal that individual chains of polymers with oriented structures could have high thermal conductivity, because such stretched polymeric chains effectively conduct phonons through polymeric covalent bonds. Previously, we have found that the liquid crystalline assembly composed of one of the filamentous viruses, M13 bacteriophages (M13 phages), shows high thermal diffusivity even though the assembly is based on non-covalent bonds. Despite such potential applicability of biopolymeric assemblies as thermal conductive materials, stability against heating has rarely been investigated. Herein, we demonstrate the maintenance of high thermal diffusivity in smectic liquid crystalline-oriented M13 phage-based assemblies after high temperature (150 ?C) treatment. The liquid crystalline orientation of the M13 phage assemblies plays an important role in the stability against heating processes. Our results provide insight into the future use of biomolecular assemblies for reliable thermal conductive materials.

Ligand Shell Engineering to Achieve Optimal Photoalignment of Semiconductor Quantum Rods for Liquid Crystal Displays
摘要: The photoalignment process to align semiconductor quantum rods (QRs) in the liquid crystal monomer (LCM) matrix is a flexible technology; however, the optical quality of the resulting enhancement films drops at high concentrations of the QRs. The compatibility between the ligand shell on the QRs and the LCM plays an important role in avoiding this issue. Herein, several kinds of ligand shells on the rod-in-rod CdSe/CdS QRs are designed, without affecting the optical properties of QRs, and their compatibility with LCM molecules is studied. Promesogenic dendritic ligands in combination with relatively short alkylphosphonic acids are found to provide the highest optical quality, without QR aggregation, and so the high brightness of the resulting enhancement films, even at higher concentrations of QRs in LCM, which is perfectly suitable for the application in liquid crystal displays.

Nano pattern transfer on acrylic polymers with UV irradiation for liquid crystal alignment
摘要: Ultra-violet nanoimprint lithography was utilized to transfer a one-dimensional nano pattern onto a hydrophilic ultra-violet cured polymer surface for use in liquid crystal displays. A master mold with the one-dimensional nano pattern was initially constructed using laser interference lithography, which is a fast and maskless process that can be employed over a large area. The UV cured polymer showed a hydrophilic characteristic, and was used as a homogeneous alignment layer. The nano-patterned ultra-violet polymer successfully aligned the liquid crystal molecules without defects. Additionally, the liquid crystal cell was characterized by high thermal stability due to the high thermal endurance of UV cured polymer. Therefore, the proposed ultra-violet nanoimprint lithography technique is beneficial for advanced liquid crystal devices with high brightness and resolution with numerous switching components that require a high thermal cost.
