  • Pushing Boundaries: High Pressure, Supercritical Optical Floating Zone Materials Discovery

    摘要: In this perspective review, we provide the rationale for utilizing supercritical fluids for solid state materials discovery in the context of recent advances in the field of high pressure synthesis. We discuss the importance of the transition from gas-like to solvent-like environments in which materials synthesis and crystallization is occurring, the appropriate conceptual frameworks for its impact on synthesis and directional solidification, and dispel popular myths. We provide an overview of materials that have been grown in single crystal form by the high pressure optical floating zone technique, report the first successful stable molten zone in an optical furnace at P = 300 bar, and show viability of the traveling solvent method even with high fluid pressures. Further, we report on some unexpected observations found in the highly dynamic synthesis environment of supercritical fluids, enabled by the ability to observe, in real time, materials behavior. Finally, we offer a perspective on the scientific domains opened by these new capabilities.

  • Unidirectional Branching Growth of Dipeptide Single Crystals for Remote Light Multiplication and Collection

    摘要: Herein, we report on the unidirectional branched assembly of diphenylalanine dipeptide through a one-step rapid evaporation process. Large numbers of crystalline tubular branches with smooth surfaces are developed from a hexagonal solid microrod mimicking a “Christmas tree”. Density functional theory suggests the formation of tubular diphenylalanine aggregates with cis isomers. The diphenylalanine branched assembly shows good optical waveguide properties that can transmit light homogenously along the crystal fibers as well as harvest light from the tips of branches to the microrod terminals. These findings hold importance in the development of bio-inspired optical fibers for information transmission in a microscale.

  • Crystal Multi-Conformational Control Through Deformable Carbon-Sulfur Bond for Singlet-Triplet Emissive Tuning

    摘要: Crystal-state luminophores have been of great interest in optoelectronics for years, whereas the excited state regulation at the crystal level is still restricted by the lack of control ways. We report that the singlet–triplet emissive property can be profoundly regulated by crystal conformational distortions. Employing fluoro-substituted tetrakis(arylthio)benzene luminophores as prototype, we found that couples of molecular conformations formed during different crystallizations. The deformable carbon–sulphur bond essentially drove the distortion of the molecular conformation and varied the stacking mode, together with diverse non-covalent interactions, leading to the proportional adjustment of the fluorescence and phosphorescence bands. This intrinsic strategy was further applied for solid-state multicolor emission and mechanoluminescence, probably offering new insights for design of smart crystal luminescent materials.

  • Transistor Characteristics of Single Crystalline C<sub>8</sub>-BTBT Grown in Coated Liquid Crystal Solution on Photo-Alignment Films

    摘要: We examined single crystal growth of benzothienobenzothiophene-based organic semiconductors by solution coating method using liquid crystal and investigated its electrical characteristics. As the results, we revealed that the averaged mobility in the saturation region reached 2.08 cm2/Vs along crystalline b-axis, and 1.08 cm2/Vs along crystalline a-axis.

  • Performance analysis of PV panels based on different technologies after two years of outdoor exposure in Fukushima, Japan

    摘要: Nominal values reported for PV Systems are measured at carefully-controlled test conditions. While being strictly standardized to achieve a good benchmarking capability for different, newly manufactured panels; these conditions hardly exist in real-life implementation sites. To add to the problem, highly varying climate, precipitation, scorching sun and freezing snow wear out these systems in the long run. Therefore, actual performance of any PV system is, inevitably, different than those reported under standard test conditions. In order to have a more accurate expectation of power generation over the lifetime of a system, it is important to know the impact of local conditions and the resilience of PV panels to them. To this end, several outdoor performance studies have been reported around the world and the literature is growing. This work reports the impact of Fukushima's weather, which is known to be windy in autumn and have heavy snowfall in the winter, on the installed PV systems. Also, numerous panels belonging to different PV technologies and manufacturers are installed side-by-side to compare the variation in their performances and, thus, benchmark their quality and resilience. To investigate possible impact of micro-climate, or local geographical conditions, two test sites in Fukushima Prefecture are utilized. Finally, a sample PV system calculation is presented to showcase the impacts of these findings on a PV system in planning and operation stages.

  • Surface ferromagnetism in ZnO single crystal

    摘要: We report on the room temperature surface ferromagnetism in undoped ZnO bulk single crystal. Typical ferromagnetic saturation behavior is clearly demonstrated by magnetization loops, and the saturated magnetization can be manipulated by annealing under argon atmosphere. A strongly correlation, between the saturated magnetization and the concentration of singly occupied oxygen vacancies on the surface of ZnO single crystal, is established by means of the Raman spectra, photoluminescence, electron paramagnetic resonance and atomic force microscope. It is suggested that the observed room temperature ferromagnetism in ZnO single crystal should be attributed to the effect of surface oxygen vacancy defects. This finding may help to get further insight into the ferromagnetic origin in other undoped oxide semiconductor materials.

  • Crystal Structures and Optical Properties of Two Novel 1,3,5-Trisubstituted Pyrazoline Derivatives

    摘要: Two novel 1,3,5-trisubstituted pyrazoline derivatives—1-acetyl-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)-pyrazoline (2a) and 1-(4-nitrophenyl)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)-pyrazoline (2b)—were synthesized and their structures were determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Both of the two crystals exhibit twisted structures due to the large dihedral angles between the pyrazolinyl ring and the aromatic ring at the 5-position (88.09° for 2a and 71.26° for 2b). The optical–physical properties of the two compounds were investigated. The fluorescent emission of 2b arises from the 1,3-disubstituted pyrazoline chromophores and exhibits a red shift in polar solvents and solid-state, which could be attributed to photo-induced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from N1 to C3 in the pyrazoline moiety and the intermolecular interactions within the crystal. The fluorescent emissions of 2a (λmax 358–364 nm) in solvents and solid-state both come from 6-methoxy-2-naphthyl chromophores, which are fairly insensitive to the solvent polarity.

  • Single Crystal Diamond Deposited by Dual Radio-Frequency Plasma Jet CVD with High Growth Rate

    摘要: Single crystal diamonds were deposited on high pressure high temperature (HPHT) substrate with high growth rate, up to 18.5 μm/h, by using dual radio-frequency inductive coupled plasma jet. The methane ?ux was found to in?uence the growth rate of single crystal diamond. The reason for this might be ascribed to the electron temperature increase, raising the ?ux of methane, based on the plasma diagnosis results by optical emission spectra (OES). The results of Raman spectroscopy and the X-ray rocking-curve indicated that as-deposited diamonds are of good quality.

  • Structural and electrical properties of Sb<sub>x</sub>W<sub>1-x</sub>Se<sub>2</sub> (0, 0.5) ternary alloys

    摘要: In present article, we demonstrated for the first time the synthesis and properties of SbXW1-XSe2 (0, 0.5) ternary alloys. The crystals of SbXW1-XSe2 (0, 0.5) ternary alloys were grown by direct vapour transport technique. The XRD results confirm the 2H-hexagonal lattice structure with P63/mmc space group and grown crystals are highly crystallographic c-axis oriented. The screw dislocation mechanism is predominating in the growth process of Sb0.5W0.5Se2 crystals. The results of electrical characterization show n-type semiconducting nature. The Raman spectra exhibit peaks corresponding to out of plane A1g, in-plane E2g and 2LA modes of vibration which is attributing the 2H-polymorph of grown SbXW1-XSe2 (0, 0.5) ternary alloys. The results shows substitution of Sb (+5) on W (+4) lattice site due to similar ionic size. The band gap tailoring from 0.93 to 1.40 eV is achieved, suggesting the effective way to tune the material characteristics for high performance devices.

  • A method for determining the orientation of [011] poled relaxor ferroelectric single crystal disks

    摘要: A new method for determining the crystal orientation of [011] poled relaxor ferroelectric single crystal (RFSC) disks has been developed. This Technical Note describes the measurement techniques and mathematical approaches associated with this new method, which is possible due to the anisotropic response of [011] poled single crystal disks. Experimentally, the disks are subject to a distributed edge load at a series of angular orientations, with the output voltage recorded at each orientation. Equations have been developed to govern a particle swarm to find an optimised fit to the experimental data yielding the crystal orientation of the disk which is required for practical applications. Approximate values for the piezoelectric charge constants d31, d32 are also determined. The method is demonstrated on a RFSC Mn-PMN-PZ-PT disk, comparing favourably with a synchrotron x-ray transmission diffraction study on the same disk.
