The study successfully demonstrates the generation of stable and tunable multi-wavelength lasers using SMS-based MZIs with different spooling radii. The lasers exhibit FSR tuning from 0.89 to 0.99 nm and high stability over 100 min, making them suitable for microwave photonics applications.

The spooling radius is limited to a range of 30–80 mm to avoid exceeding the threshold that excites propagating modes into radiation modes. The extinction ratio decreases with smaller spooling radii due to increased bending losses.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
The study utilizes six single–multi–single (SMS) mode fiber-based Mach–Zehnder Interferometers (MZI) with different spooling radii as spatial mode filtering elements. The FSR tuning is achieved by changing the spooling radius of the two-mode step index fiber section within the MZI setups.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
The MZIs are fabricated using conventional
3:5 m long pigtailed single-mode fibers (SMF-28s) and a 5 m long two-mode step index fiber (TMSIF). List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
The setup includes a 1400 nm laser diode, polarization-insensitive isolators, a wavelength division multiplexer, a
4:6 m thulium–fluoride fiber gain medium, a polarization controller, and a 90/10 tapped coupler. Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
The operation involves propagating the fundamental LP01 mode through the cavity, inducing an LP11 mode in the TMSIF, and producing interference patterns. The FSR is tuned by changing the spooling radius of the TMSIF.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
The output is analyzed using a Yokogawa AQ6370C optical spectrum analyzer and a Thorlabs optical power meter.
