To study the quantum confinement of the SML-QD along the lateral and vertical directions in a submonolayer quantum dot infrared photodetector.

The SML-QDs are optically active and working properly as 3d confinement centers. Although a large s-to-p responsivity ratio could be obtained at low bias, indicating an improvement of the 3d confinement with respect to conventional SK-QDs, the quality of the confinement is reduced for optimal operation conditions of the device. However, further improvement of their performances is expected with optimization of growth conditions.

The quality of the confinement is reduced for optimal operation conditions of the device due to the very small size of the SML-QDs and to the leakage of the wavefunction outside the SML-QDs at higher bias.
