The mitochondria-targeted fluorescent probe ROAL was successfully developed for the selective visualization of live-cell mitochondrial thiophenols and their induced oxidative stress process. ROAL exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity towards thiophenols, with an ultralow detection limit. It was effectively used to image mitochondrial thiophenols in living cells and demonstrated the capacity of endogenous ROS to eliminate thiophenols, suggesting a link between thiophenols and cellular oxidative stress.
