研究目的
To use reflectance spectroscopy to identify spectral characteristics of surface covers related to different volcanic deposits in ice-free areas of Deception Island, South-Shetland Islands, and to use this information to identify and extract information from multispectral satellite data.
研究成果
The method successfully provided a preliminary distribution of different landforms and volcanic deposits on Deception Island using field, laboratory, and multispectral data. The spectral library was crucial for identifying surface covers, and the classification achieved 70% overall accuracy, demonstrating its utility for remote and inaccessible areas. This approach can be extended to the broader South Shetland Islands region.
研究不足
Optical sensors may be limited by suboptimal meteorological conditions, such as snow cover, which hindered full use of the Landsat-8 data. The classification had limited validation points due to snow cover, resulting in only an approximate estimation of deposit distribution. The spectral resolution of endmembers is limited.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
The method integrates field and laboratory work with multispectral satellite data. Field sites were selected, and samples were collected during campaigns in 2012-2013 and 2017. Spectral measurements were taken using an ASD Fieldspec3 spectroradiometer over 400-2500 nm, with samples prepared by air-drying and sieving. Multispectral Landsat-8 data from January 2014 were used for image analysis. A spectral library (NAPSPEC) was compiled, and supervised classification using Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) was performed.

Sample Selection and Data Sources:
2. Sample Selection and Data Sources: Soil and sediment samples were collected from ice-free areas of Deception Island. Landsat-8 data were obtained from USGS EarthExplorer.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
ASD Fieldspec3 spectroradiometer, ASD turntable, sieves for granulometry separation, Landsat-8 satellite data.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
Samples were collected, stored at 4°C, air-dried, and spectrally measured. They were then sieved into fractions (<2mm and >2mm) and re-measured. Landsat-8 data were resized to the area of interest, and endmembers were selected from the spectral library for classification.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
Spectral curves were pre-processed and stored in a georeferenced database. SAM classifier was used for supervised classification, with accuracy assessed using field data and cartographic information (overall accuracy and kappa coefficient).
