研究目的
To study the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and retinal alterations in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy treated with photodynamic therapy, and its correlation with functional parameters such as best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and contrast sensitivity (CS).
研究成果
Time evolution and number of outbreaks were related to decreased foveal and choroidal thickness and worse BCVA and CS. RPE abnormalities and atrophy were related to the age of onset of symptoms. Photoreceptor elongation correlated with poor BCVA, and IS/OS line destructuring and interruption correlated with poor CS. IS/OS layer alteration in chronic CSC treated with PDT is responsible for decreases in BCVA and CS, which are essential for patient assessment and monitoring.
研究不足
Small sample size and lack of a control group. Another multicenter study with a larger sample size is needed for conclusive results.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
Retrospective, noncomparative consecutive study using optical coherence tomography (OCT) to evaluate retinal and RPE changes in patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy treated with photodynamic therapy (PDT). Statistical analysis was performed using SAS software.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
31 eyes from 26 patients with chronic CSC (duration at least 6 months) treated with verteporfin PDT. Excluded patients with media opacities, uncontrolled glaucoma, history of intraocular surgery, or previous vitreoretinal disease. Data collected from ophthalmic examinations including BCVA, CS, biomicroscopy, funduscopy, and OCT.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) device (Cirrus raster; Carl Zeiss Meditec), verteporfin for PDT, SAS software for statistical analysis.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
Patients underwent complete ophthalmic examination. OCT was used to visualize and quantify macular defects. PDT treatment was administered based on standard or half-dose verteporfin. Data on epidemiological factors and OCT variables were collected and analyzed.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
Statistical analysis using SAS ver. 9.1. Pearson's chi-square or Fisher exact tests for qualitative variables, Mann-Whitney test for associations between quantitative and qualitative variables, Pearson bivariate correlations for quantitative variables. Significance set at p < 0.05.
