  • Lorentzian demodulation algorithm for multimode polymer optical fiber Bragg gratings

    摘要: For strain sensing applications, we develop a simple and accurate Lorentzian demodulation algorithm for fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) inscribed in multimode optical fibers. As multimode FBG spectra generally exhibit multiple peaks, simply tracking some particular spectral peaks (i.e., maximum detection) results in measurement failure when the strain is large. Here, using an FBG inscribed in a perfluorinated graded-index multimode polymer optical fiber, we experimentally evaluate the new method by comparing its performance with those of other demodulation algorithms, such as the maximum and centroid detection methods. Finally, using this method, we demonstrate the accurate measurement of strain of up to 1.0%.

  • Alternated Q-switched and gain-switched dual-pulse Yb fiber laser with Tm-Ho co-doped fiber as saturable absorber

    摘要: We demonstrate a dual-wavelength and dual-pulse Yb-doped fiber laser with a Tm-Ho co-doped fiber as saturable absorber (SA). The wavelength of the first pulse in the dual-pulsing output is at 1064 nm generated via SA-induced self Q-switching and the second pulse is at 2127.7 nm and generated by gain-switching with the laser at 1064 nm as the pump for the Tm ions in the Tm-Ho co-doped fiber and thus induced stimulated emission. With the increases of the pump power, the pulse duration of the two pulses is decreased depending on the level of the pump. The pulse duration of the laser at 1064 nm decreases from 1.4 μs to 296 ns when the pump power increases from 275 mW to 475 mW, while the pulse duration at 2127.7 nm is reduced from 440 ns to 246 ns when the pump increases from 300 mW to 475 mW. Accordingly, the repetition rate is decreased from 17.4 kHz to 6.8 kHz. The experimental result shows that Tm-Ho co-doped fiber is an excellent candidate for SA-induced Q-switching at 1064 nm.

  • Large-Dynamic Frequency Response Measurement for Broadband Electro-Optic Phase Modulators

    摘要: A novel method for characterizing the frequency responses of broadband electro-optic phase modulators (PMs) by employing stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed method, the SBS amplifies the +1st-order sideband and attenuates the -1st-order sideband of the phase-modulated signal from a PM under test. Thereby, the phase-modulated signal is converted into an optical single-sideband (OSSB) modulation signal. After square-law photodetection, the overall frequency responses are obtained. Removing the frequency responses of the SBS gain and the photodetector (PD) from the overall responses, the responses of the PM are thus achieved. Benefitting from the amplification of the SBS, the proposed method possesses a large dynamic range. Sub-Hz resolution and broadband measurement range are also achievable. A commercial broadband PM is experimentally characterized from 10 MHz to 50 GHz with a resolution of 5 MHz. According to the amplification of the SBS, the dynamic range is enhanced by 17.74 dB. The measurement result is verified by the conventional method utilizing optical spectrum analysis.

  • Investigation of narrow band random fiber ring laser based on random phase-shift Bragg grating

    摘要: A random ?ber laser based on a 25 mm long random phase-shift ?ber Bragg grating with a ring cavity is experimentally demonstrated in this paper. The random phase-shift grating is fabricated with the beam-scanning method in a single-mode ?ber. The random feedback and light localization are achieved by introducing 20 phase-shift points with random amplitudes along the grating length. A narrow band single-wavelength random ?ber laser with the 3 dB bandwidth of 0.44 pm is realized with a 980 nm laser pumping at 130 mW. The optical signal-to-noise ratio up to 55 dB is obtained at the same pump power. The pump threshold is only 21.8 mW. The number of emitted wavelengths is changeable by adjusting the pump power. The lasing wavelength near 1549.96 nm presents a maximum ?uctuation range of only 1.1 pm over time. With the random grating exposed to water, the mode competition is suppressed and the laser can be operated at more stable single-wavelength mode.

  • Tunable Ytterbium-Doped Mode-locked Fiber Laser Based on Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

    摘要: A tunable mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser with a tuning range of 55 nm is demonstrated. Currently, this is the widest tuning range for all-normal dispersion (ANDi) ytterbium-doped mode-locked fiber laser based on new-material saturable absorber (SA). The combined effects of the single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) saturable absorber and a reflective grating significantly improved laser performance: broad tuning range, superb stability and repeatability. The experimental results indicate that SWCNTs can be a brilliant saturable absorber in all-normal dispersion regime at 1 μm, with pulse width of 2.4 ps and optical spectral bandwidth of 1.6 nm across the full tuning range. The laser also shows that the optical spectrum can be tuned accurately and continuously, which gives possibility for various applications such as optical communications, spectroscopy, time-resolved measurement, etc.

  • Optical fiber magnetic field sensor based on birefringence in liquid core optical waveguide

    摘要: An optical fiber magnetic field sensor based on the birefringence of magnetic fluid is proposed by filling the magnetic fluid into a hollow-core waveguide. The birefringence characteristics of magnetic fluids with different concentrations tuned by magnetic field were investigated under different magnetic fields when the filled hollow-core waveguide is placed in a Sagnac loop. As the magnetic field increases, the internal chain-like structure of the magnetic fluid increases, resulting in changes in birefringence. The experimental results show that the device has a highly linear response to the variation of magnetic field intensity in the range of 0–300 Oe with the maximum sensitivity of 29.2 pm/Oe and resolution of 0.68 Oe. The proposed magnetic field sensor has such advantages as ease of fabrication, simple structure, low cost and it is expected to find potential applications in the magnetic field measurement with high accuracy, optical fiber gyroscopes, magneto-optic modulators and so on. Due to the external field tunability, the device also provides a promising technology for microfluidics research.

  • An optical angle sensor based on chromatic dispersion with a mode-locked laser source

    摘要: This paper proposes a new optical angle sensor, in which a mode-locked laser is employed as the light source, and chromatic dispersion of a collimator objective is utilized to detect the angular displacement of a target of interest. In the proposed method, each of the optical modes in the femtosecond laser beam reflected from the reflector mounted on a target of interest is separated from the others by chromatic dispersion of a collimator objective to generate a group of focused laser beams that can be utilized as the scale for measurement of an angular displacement of the target. By detecting the change in peak frequency in optical spectra obtained by the photodetector, a small angular displacement can be measured. In this paper, as the first step of research, a prototype optical setup is developed, and some basic experiments are carried out to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method for measurement of angular displacement.

  • Graphene Heterostructure Integrated Optical Fiber Bragg Grating for Light Motion Tracking and Ultrabroadband Photodetection from 400 nm to 10.768 μm

    摘要: Integrated photonics and optoelectronics devices based on graphene and related 2D materials are at the core of the future industrial revolution, facilitating compact and flexible nanophotonic devices. Tracking and detecting the motion of broadband light in millimeter to nanometer scale is an unfold science which has not been fully explored. In this work, tracking and detecting the motion of light (millimeter precision) is first demonstrated by integrating graphene with an optical fiber Bragg grating device (graphene-FBG). When the incident light moves toward and away from the graphene-FBG device, the Bragg wavelength red-shifts and blue-shifts, indicating its light motion tracking ability. Such light tracking capability can be further extended to an ultrabroad wavelength range as all-optical photodetectors show the robust response from 400 nm to 10.768 μm with a linear optical response. Interestingly, it is found that graphene-Bi2Te3 heterostructure on FBG shows 87% higher photoresponse than graphene-FBG at both visible and telecom wavelengths, due to stronger phonon-electron coupling and photo-thermal conversion in the heterostructure. The device also shows superior stability even after 100 d. This work may open up amazing integrated nanophotonics applications such as astrophysics, optical communication, optical computing, optical logic gating, spectroscopy, and laser biology.

  • Stable injection locking with slotted Fabry–Perot lasers at 2 <i>μ</i> m

    摘要: Injection locking has many applications in telecommunications systems, such as narrowing linewidths, increasing bandwidth and improving filtering. Beyond telecommunications, injection locking is widely used in remote sensing. This is of particular interest for applications in the 2 μm region, where gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapour and methane have identifiable absorption features. In this paper, we demonstrate stable injection locking with slotted Fabry–Perot lasers in the 2 μm wavelength region. Injection locking was observed in both the optical domain and power spectrum; with key features recorded such as injection ‘pulling’, side-mode suppression and the characteristic quiet region in the electrical domain denoting single-frequency emission and stable locking. The effect of varying the injection ratio was investigated, with a decreased injection ratio corresponding to a reduction in the locking bandwidth. Finally, the lasers were shown to remain injection locked, with no thermal drift, for over 24 h, indicating their suitability for implementation in a real-world telecommunications system.

  • Enhanced optical Kerr nonlinearity of graphene/Si hybrid waveguide

    摘要: In this work, we experimentally study the optical Kerr nonlinearities of graphene/Si hybrid waveguides with enhanced self-phase modulation. In the case of CMOS compatible materials for nonlinear optical signal processing, Si and silicon nitride waveguides have been extensively investigated over the past decade. However, Si waveguides exhibit strong two-photon absorption (TPA) at telecommunication wavelengths, which leads to a signi?cant reduction of the nonlinear ?gure-of-merit (FOM). In contrast, a silicon nitride based material system usually suppresses the TPA but simultaneously leads to the reduction of Kerr nonlinearity by one order of magnitude. Here, we introduce a graphene/Si hybrid waveguide, which maintains the optical properties and CMOS compatibility of Si waveguides, while enhancing the Kerr nonlinearity, by transferring over to the top of the waveguides. The graphene/Si waveguides are measured to have an enhanced nonlinear parameter of 510 W(cid:2)1 m(cid:2)1, compared with that of the Si waveguide of 150 W(cid:2)1 m(cid:2)1. An enhanced nonlinear FOM of 2.48 6 0.25 has been achieved, which is four times larger than that of the Si waveguide of 0.6 6 0.1. This work reveals the potential application of graphene/Si hybrid waveguides with high Kerr nonlinearity and FOM for nonlinear all-optical signal processing.
