To improve the photovoltaic properties of purple membranes (PMs) by means of F?rster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from quantum dots (QDs) to bacteriorhodopsin (bR) under near-infrared (NIR) two-photon excitation.

CdSe/ZnS/CdS/ZnS core/multishell QDs and PMs isolated from Halobacterium salinarum were used.

A Cary 60 UV-Vis spectrophotometer, a Cary Eclipse spectrofluorimeter, a Tsunami femtosecond laser with Millenia X pumping, and an M266 spectrograph were employed.

QDs were transferred to an aqueous solution and mixed with PMs to form QD-PM complexes. Photoluminescence and photoelectric signals were measured under NIR excitation.

FRET efficiency was calculated using PL intensities and absorption spectra, and photoelectric signals were compared between QD-PM complexes and PMs alone.
