Investigating the effect of CO2 laser cutting parameters on the mechanical and microstructural characteristics of high strength steel.

The laser control parameters significantly affect the material and the cut front properties both macroscopically and microscopically. The microscopic properties are mainly changes due to heat in the HAZ and due to increase in surface roughness. Mathematical modelling and response surface methods are mostly employed to find the optimum value of control parameters to reduce defects and HAZ. The study concludes that for different materials, the effect and the values change but some characteristics and parameter dependency like HAZ, kerf width on the power, cutting speed, laser beam diameter etc remains similar.

The analysis is mainly based on relatively smaller thickness of sections (up to 10 mm), and the optimization techniques provide relative parameters without exactly indicating which parameter has the highest effect on the performance characteristic value. The study lacks detailed analysis on the generation of residual stress in the cut front.
