Investigating the energetics and energy loss in 2D Ruddlesden–Popper perovskite solar cells to understand the fundamental questions on their energetics and improve their efficiency and stability.

The study reveals that n–n junctions form at 2D RPP/PCBM interfaces, promoting charge separation and reducing recombination, leading to the smallest energy loss and highest Voc in PSCs based on 2D RPP (n = 5)/PCBM. Inserting a thin 2D RPP capping layer between pure 3D perovskite and PCBM significantly increases Voc, attributed to enhanced interfacial potential.

The study focuses on the interface energetics and does not extensively explore the bulk properties or long-term stability of the 2D RPPs. The experimental setup may not capture all real-world operating conditions of PSCs.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
The study systematically investigates the energetics at (PEA)2(MA)n?1PbnI3n+1/PCBM interfaces with varying n values using UPS, XPS, PL, TRPL, XRD, GIWAXS, SEM, AFM, and C–V measurements.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
Perovskite films with n values of 1, 3, 5, 40, and ∞ were prepared by spin-casting precursor solutions.

Materials include PbI2, MAI, PEAI, PCBM, BCP, GBL, DMSO, DMF, CB, PEDOT:PSS. Equipment includes SEM, AFM, XRD, GIWAXS, UPS, XPS, PL spectrometer, TRPL, UV–vis spectrophotometer, electrochemical workstation.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
Films were characterized by SEM, AFM, XRD, GIWAXS, UPS, XPS, PL, TRPL, and C–V measurements. Devices were fabricated and their performance was evaluated.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
Data were analyzed using software tools for XRD, GIWAXS, UPS, XPS, PL, TRPL, and C–V measurements.
